I picked up a new jig saw today, and while it was at a great price I had to sacrifice one thing: it doesn't have an angle gauge on it. I really, really wanted to get the one I saw that had a sweet gauge built into it but couldn't pass up the deal on this one. So, my problem is that I don't know how to measure the angle of the shoe before I make the cut and I don't see a built in way.

Li'l help? Somewhere online I saw something about using a protractor to get it but that don't help much since I haven't used a protractor since middle school!

Get yourself one of the small combination squares. Aluminum triangle with an adjustable arm that measures angles, should do the trick.

So then I would set the square on the piece I was cutting and then measure the angle of the shoe? Or the blade?

you can go to just about any Lowes and get what is called an inclinometer  It is a round guage (usually red with a clear center) inside a black frame with a 45 Degree and a 90 degree angle on the sides.  The needle (usually red floating in a clear center glass) will point to the degree of incline of your base if you just set it on the base.  They are usually sold by the levels.

Cool, thanks guys! That looks like something I'll get other uses out of, so I'll look for one.

We used to use them to properly align the driveshaft/rear end yokes on stock cars and drag cars and to check chamber on the front ends of the same.  Some of them have a magnetic base which is good for hands-off measuring (as long as your working with a ferrous metal.)
