I know they get fish earlier in New York than they do in Erie.  With the colder temps I was wondering if it might be worth it to drive another hour or two to scratch my big fish itch?

I don't know of anywhere in New York that has fishable numbers before PA does, maybe there is, I don't spend much time up there, but anytime I've been to NY in September steelhead numbers have been low.
Actually, there might not be anything behind it,  but I've noticed a strange coincidence.  Generally when I run into the first decent sized school of 100+ steelhead at the mouth of the creeks in PA, the Salmon River generally reports a decent showing of King Salmon the very next day. Sounds crazy, but that's the way it's been .

Are you referring to Lake Ontario?
Early September (Labor Day Weekend) is usually a good bet on the Salmon River.
Not as many fish as October but not as many people, either.

If you want steelhead, you want to go in november. Thanksgiving is loaded with steel, and not so loaded with people. In october , you have a lot of left over salmon snaggers snagging steel. Ill wait until it gets cold.

Once again it is all dependent on conditions.  Good water flow, colder temps = fish will start up early.  Hot temps, low water flow = few fish, bad run.  The fish are going to try to run no matter what; but conditions may prove to be excellent or very poor.  Last year sucked so bad I cancelled my trip.  This year looks good to possibly too much flow.   Check the reports for water flow out of the dam and the flow data for the Black river.  Those are good indicators.  Also check out the NY sites on this site.

Don't have to go all the way to the Salmon River, or even Oak Orchard.  There are lots of fish that run 18 mile creek in Olcott, NY and the lower Niagara River (helps to have a boat here).  This it the first year for pen reared returns at 18 mile, and I am interested to see what the returns look like, especially with the abundance of large fish in the western basin.

I've fished Jefferson County, NY many times and found the best time to be end of September - first of October.
Temperature and water (flow) are critical!

Hopefully I can help a little having lived in the north country of new york for a while.   I have caught salmon in the second and third weeks in august on the salmon river.    And depending on the water flow and temps they do get good early runs of fish, but remember the salmon river is a very big river and it doesn't take long for the fish to spread out!  Skamanias and atlantics are always a late summer bonus fish in the salmon river too!!

Now on the other hand would I suggest a 4 to 5 hour trip for early fish??  Probably not??  But hey if your up there for other reasons stop buy and give it a shot!!!  And if you do decide to make the trip be sure to check the water flow.  Usually early runs come during and just after the white water release!!

I'm not really sure how early the pa tribs get fish but I would guess it depends on the same conditions as new york??  I have only fished pa once but I definately will be fishing them more having moved to jamestown.

Smallhook,

If you are talking steelhead, then no. Yes, there are steelhead in the Salmon River 12 months of the year, but your chances of getting one are VERY slim to none. I've fished the river about 12 times in the summer. Twice I have been lucky enough to fish over skamania (during high water) and a few times for atlantics. We did VERY well on the Atlantics a few years back, but I've only ever had one skamania during the summer.

At this time of year, there are a few salmon in the river. The best place to try is the Douglaston Salmon run, but that does not open until mid August. Even then, you may only see 2-3 fish a morning...if any at all. The begining of September is a different story. In a matter of 2-3 days, you can have salmon from top to bottom in fishable numbers. I've fished the upper river on September 6th with hundreds of salmon moving past me with one other guy in sight. 2 or 3 years ago we were hooking 30+ salmon in the morning, and another 30+ in the evening above the Trestle Pool with nobody around. That was the week from September 10th-17th.

If you have the time and money, you can fish to salmon the first couple weeks of September, and possibly hit it GREAT!

You can start to target steelhead anytime, but the fall run fish will start coming up in a couple weeks. If you fish egg sacs in fast water, you can hook into a couple early September with alot of walking.

This fishery is mainly based on water flows and water temperatures. But it can let loose at ANY time. I believe 2001 was the year that thousands of salmon ran the river in 185cfs and 80 degree weather. 3 years ago in mid September we were into fish all day long in 80 degree weather and 385cfs. Last year, September 10th and 11th were insane with coho busting by all day long. September 2nd last year was the evening I landed my first king, and the following nights that week had more fish each time showing up.

You never know man....

Best,
Fisher
