Smallhook, If you are talking steelhead, then no. Yes, there are steelhead in the Salmon River 12 months of the year, but your chances of getting one are VERY slim to none. I've fished the river about 12 times in the summer. Twice I have been lucky enough to fish over skamania (during high water) and a few times for atlantics. We did VERY well on the Atlantics a few years back, but I've only ever had one skamania during the summer. At this time of year, there are a few salmon in the river. The best place to try is the Douglaston Salmon run, but that does not open until mid August. Even then, you may only see 2-3 fish a morning...if any at all. The begining of September is a different story. In a matter of 2-3 days, you can have salmon from top to bottom in fishable numbers. I've fished the upper river on September 6th with hundreds of salmon moving past me with one other guy in sight. 2 or 3 years ago we were hooking 30+ salmon in the morning, and another 30+ in the evening above the Trestle Pool with nobody around. That was the week from September 10th-17th. If you have the time and money, you can fish to salmon the first couple weeks of September, and possibly hit it GREAT! You can start to target steelhead anytime, but the fall run fish will start coming up in a couple weeks. If you fish egg sacs in fast water, you can hook into a couple early September with alot of walking. This fishery is mainly based on water flows and water temperatures. But it can let loose at ANY time. I believe 2001 was the year that thousands of salmon ran the river in 185cfs and 80 degree weather. 3 years ago in mid September we were into fish all day long in 80 degree weather and 385cfs. Last year, September 10th and 11th were insane with coho busting by all day long. September 2nd last year was the evening I landed my first king, and the following nights that week had more fish each time showing up. You never know man.... Best, Fisher
