Brian,

Welcome. I can't help you with the question but I can with your grammar.  "IAM" isn't a word.  "IAM NOT TAKING IT OUT NO 2 MILES" uses a double negative, and actually states that you will be taking it out 2 miles.  At the end of a complete thought, use a period.  Generally, do not put more than one complete thought in any given sentence.  If you do this without proper punctuation and/or conjunctions, it is called a run-on sentence.  Also, while not a grammar mistake, the CAPS LOCK can be annoying and it seems as if you are yelling.

Now that I'm done with that.  I think that you will enjoy the board and I hope that you get a serious answer to your question.  Good luck when you come up.  Those smallies are a blast!

Mike

Welcome! I sometimes use caps - vision fades in old age, but catarac surgery helped! I have a 16 foot deep V and go out 2-3 miles. You just have to respect the power of the lake and know the limitations of your equipment. There are several times when I just go slow. In my younger days, I fished with my Uncle on Lake Ontario from a 12 -13 foot Gruman aluminum boat. Of course there are days when you don't go out big boat or small! Don't be embarassed to wear your life jacket either! You've probably heard the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald - the lakes have more power than any vessel!

If you like to eat fish, the perch are usually a little farther out! Good luck and good fishing.

mgolf92,
I don't think he asked for a smart-assed grammar lesson from a kid like you. Why would you even respond if you weren't answering his questions? I never get involved in this crap but your response just put me overboard after a long day on the lake.

Run-on sentences, improper punctuation and double negatives irk me in day to day conversations.  However, this is a fishing board for crying out loud.  Give the guy a break.  Nice way to welcome a new voice to this forum.

I have a 16 ft Crestliner and fish Erie all the time. You just have to keep an eye one the weather and use common sense. I have no problems running 10 to 12 miles offshore as long as the forecast is perfect( winds 10 or less from the south/ southwest)  You can launch anywhere, just use common sense, and you will be fine.

I'm sorry if offense was taken to my reponse.  I appologize.  I wasn't being serious, just wasting some time.  I thought the second part of my post lightened the mood.

BASSX08- I'd like to give you a sincere welcome to the board.

Bass... welcome aboard.

Two pieces of advice.

First... you can go out on Erie in your boat... on the right day. Pay attention to weather reports and since they are wrong half the time get a marine radio and listen to the up to the minute reports on the weather channel periodically while you are out. If you fish out of Walnut the nice lady in the bulding there watches the reports and radar closely and she's like your mom telling you when to come in out of the rain. If something is coming that you should know about she'll let you know on the radio. I think she worries about us and she usually tells you to get into the harbor if there's even a remote chance of nasty storm fronts or lightning.

The other is this.... Your boating experince is a huge factor. Some could die on North Park lake. I've seen others out in 14 footers when I couldn't see them between the waves and they are smilling and banging fish. Just take Erie one step at a time and you'll be fine.

Like someone above said, there are days when you could go out in a canoe and days where the 25 footers are getting the heck off of the lake. I think picking the right day is the number one consideration.

Good luck!!!!!!! and BE SAFE.

Welcome BassX08

I live in Cranberry and fished Erie and the Bay for 15 years in a 16' Sea Nymph with a 50 horse evinrude.  My two boys and my dad spent lots of time catching Walleye, Steelhead, Coho, Smallmouth, Perch etc.

You will be limited as to how many days you will be able to get out on the main lake.  There were many times when we made the trip up to Walnut only to find it to rough to go out. The weather HAS TO BE PERFECT to go out on the main lake.  PERFECT means High pressure overhead and winds from the south, South West or West. When the weather was perfect, we would wonder out into 60-72 FOW and fish. When the lake is flat, you can scream out 6 miles in about 15 minutes... The last two years I have fished out of a 24' Wellcraft and retired the Sea Nymph.  I like the Sea Nymph better because your right there at the water netting the fish instead of standing 5 ft above. Only drawback with the Sea Nymph is I could only fish 6-Rods max. 4-Flat lines/dipseys and 2 on riggers. Anything more was a tangled mess some days.

Anyway, on days you find the Lake is too rough or it is due to blow up, launch at Lampy Marina and fish the Bay. Rarely will you be disappointed. Some of the best smallmouth fishing in the country is right in Presque Isle bay. Kids really don't care what they catch. A Bluegill is the same as a Walleye to them and the more the better.

Best of Luck!

I will go with south or south west, but west winds are not the best winds for a low wave height.

Yeah man..... west winds are no better for wave height than east. South or southwest is best. Remember too that if you launch in the east instead of Walnut the deep water is alot closer....like half the distance.

If there is one thing that you'll need to take along to guarantee safety it's good 'ol common sense. A weather report and a little of that & you'll be fine.

BASSX08,                                                                                  Welcome to this board. It is a great information site and I have found it very helpful. I have a 16ft Sea Nymph with a 60hp. This is the first year I have taken it on Erie. Just be smart like everyone said above and have fun, there are some huge fish to be caught.

I look at this site and personally prefer a light(5-10) south or southeast wind since the shoreline of PA goes from southeast to northwest. This site isn't always right but a good view of what could be expected. When it is gray colored on the Erie shore, you're good to go out 2 miles, try Northeast Marina on those days. Good water less than a mile offshore for smallies.

I have a 16 ft Smoker craft with a 40 hp. Went out to 1st trench last week on Tue .2 ft or less great day .On Wed tried to sneak out early and beat the rush Little after daylight wind picked up and wave got whitecaps . Got a little wet and if waves were 2 ft higher might have been swimming. South winds and 2 ft or less priceless any thing else senseless

Welcome. I would not go out on a boat without a backup motor. 9.9 will get you home.

You can take that boat in the bay and fish your heart out in it.  I take a 14 foot myself and just hug the shoreline on a windy day.  There are TONS of huge smallies in the bay from April through June at the very least.

I thought the grammar lesson was well-taken and appropriate, and an effort was made to lighten the mood while still conveying the valid point, which is-- although spelling and grammar ERRORS are and should be overlooked, a post requesting assistance from others should show a minimum amount of care to communicate clearly and efficiently without annoyance.  As a simple example, besides the ALL CAPS annoyance, one girl on another board used to use "......" every third word or so.  It became such a chore to try to figure out what she was trying to say that I and many others simply stopped trying.  If your purpose is to communicate, it seems that some effort at making sure you are doing so makes perfect sense.
