Local West Newton newspaper has pic of woman with a 37 inch musky and a 27 inch catfish, both caught under the Smithton Bridge. She had to let the musky go, too small.

Kyler,

I am not sure alot of people saw the Redneck Wedding down at the Smithton Hole, but it was a great event for CMT. If you go to their website, they use to have pics of the wedding, not sure if they are still up there. Andy Bergman who owns and runs the Smithton Hole has helped the Smithton Sportsman Club out alot this year, he is a great dude.

I checked and the pics are still there, here is the link.

71... Thanks for posting those pics.  That's hilarious, I heard about that but never saw any photos before.

Thanks goodness the Pa F&BC took measures to better the musky fishing in Pa by raising the size to 40".  Don't get me wrong, a 37 is a decent catch but imo too small to take in and out of the freezer 50 times to show it off then throw it away cause you don't have a few hundred $ to mount it

Amen to this!!  Musky won't get big if they aren't released to get bigger.  It seems once they get over 40 in. they become wiser and more likely to get big.  I'm still waiting for a fish over 50 in...

Gentlemen, put all your Musky back!  The only way to get a 50" fish is to let them get that big.  The Fish & Boat Commission is trying to turn the Yough into a good place to catch a trophy.  They are going to keep stocking the Yough to try to get the numbers up.

Are the muskie coming from the dam or are they stocked in the river too?

I may be wrong but i don't think there were ever muskies in the dam. I think that the fish came mostly from the stocking. I have seen numerous fish below the south connellsville dam.

Ive lost a huge one on the yough right at the tail races. I hooked into a small trout then next thing I know my lines getting pulled out at a ridiculous rate, I was on the side where the building is with that asphalt walk way. I got it bout 5 feet away and it left go with part of my trout missing. It was at least 30 inches i know thats not huge but for that only ever being my 2nd ever muskie it got my pulse racing. My first and only muskie came when I was fishing for smallies at the confluence of the yough, casslemen and laurel hill. 25 incher on 4 pound test with a size 4 circlehook right in its side of its mouth were the line had no chace of hitting its teeth. my friend was terrified of grabbing it lol.

Hey Kyler, you sure it wasn't northerns that you seen/caught near the outflow.  I did hear the lake had a very small population of musky in there but there is definately a good population of northerns.  They did stock musky above the Conellsville dam before but I heard that they will only be stocked in the lower portions of the river now.

The Fish & Boat Commission is going to concentrate on certain waters to try and get larger Muskies.  The Yough is one of these areas.  I think they are going to stop stocking the Mon and put these fish in the Yough and Allegheny.  If you email the Fish Commission, Rick Larson will get back to you with their plans.  Loyalhanna Lake is another local lake that they believe will become a good Musky Lake.

I would love to see more musky on the allegheny.  The fishing the past two years have been pathetic.  Not many fish....
