I remember a 22" largemouth I caught. I was 12, we were visiting my grandparents down in Florida. I spent my days catching lizards and fishing in the canals around their yard. I was fishing with pap's light action rods, mostly throwing jigs and whatever I could steal out of the kitchen. I was content catching bluegills. Then I threw out into the canal, and just saw this huge Kraken rise from the bottom to engulf my Beetle Spin(white body with red spot on back). I hooked him, and I knew I had a big one on, so I just followed him up and down the canal, not letting him take out any drag until he wore out. I was screaming my nuts off for help, but no one in the house could hear me. In desperation, I jumped into the canal to lipland the 22" largemouth. I ran into the house like Maz rounding third, and I still remember that my dad opened the bathroom door to show my brother the fish while lil bro was in the shower. Another fish was a white bass. It was the summer of 1987, I was 9, and spending a good portion of my time fishing on the Mon river near my house. In those days I was a crankbait man, and my favorite was a Kmart house brand generic shallow running firetiger crank. I threw out, hooked the aforementioned white bass, fought him in, went to land him, only to have my line snap and my favorite lure swim away with the fish. Luckily, I had an identical copy of the crankbait and tied it on. A few casts later, get a bite, reel the fish in, and it's the same white bass, with my crank still hanging from its jaw. Another one I'll never forget is one a caught about two months ago. I was fishing out on the Yough, drifting crawlers. I feel the bump and set the hook. The fish made one nice run, then let me reel him in with no problem. I figured it to be a drum. So I'm reeling him in, he gets to about 30 feet away, and he must have seen my legs or heard me grinding gravel or something, because he immediately took about 100 yards of line off, straight downstream(I was fishing 8# line, 7' ML rod). At this point I'm seeing myself on the front page of the paper, something like "Incredibly handsome local man catches state record brown trout" or the like. Anyways, soon afterwards I realize I snagged the guy, but I refuse to give in, I work the fish closer. Eventually it turns out to be about a 7# channel cat. It took me about an hour to get him in, given the current and weight of the fish. Those are ones that I've caught that stand out in my mind. Unfortunately, the ones I didn't catch are the ones that really stand out in my memory. Sub
