Hello again folks. I needed the break from everything. Caught up on the posts yesterday and glad everyone had some fun fishing.
Last night was a fantastic night of fun and live music. Jerry Garcia lives !!

First day of rifle yesterday.
While PUTTING ON A SOCK around 4 AM  pulled my back out significantly- never did that before.
Took the hour long painful drive and made into a ground spot - hadda leave in an hour- another painful hour back home.
Never shoulda been in the woods- As I sat there, realized the spot woulda I been in  even trying to gut one , much less dragging.
Guess I kept hoping it would get better- just the opposite.
Now its day two and I sit here typing--AAARRRRRUUUUUGGGGH.

That sucks Trevor, sorry to hear and hope it gets better quick.
Not sure about fun in that but I'm back in the trees. 2 more days of the mechanical bow then gun on Saturday.
With fresh snow Tues and cold last night, it's crunchy. Little wind .
Heavy snow tonight so I hope they get active today.

Speaking of backs,
The motel we have been staying at for 33 years has probably hit rock bottom.
It used to be an awesome mom and pop run place . Another 10 years ago they sold out to a chain and we have dubbed it the terrorist training center. Its sketchy as heck. The quality makes the worst of places in Pulaski seem like the ritz.
Learned a few years ago to bring my buddy heater just in case. Well it was put to good use last night as once again, the heat Don T work.
Now for the back :
Worst bed I've ever slept in, of course I bring a sleeping bag for fear of using never been changed sheets. It took quite some doing to get stood up straight and try to work out the pain.
Only 2 more nights of sleeping in there to go , ugh..
The health department would have a field day.

I'll gladly pay $105 a night for the tailwater with no fish in the river than $100 a night in a dump with no deer in the woods, lol

Re: fun stuff 2018/11/18 18:29:40 (permalink)
Well today was the day.
Like I been posting, we have spent a LOT of time in the woods since my actual hunting began 3 weeks and 1 day ago. We know there is deer and lots on our property, my cameras dont lie, lol. We know these are mountain deer and NOBODY hunts our 1,800 foot mountain. It was starting to get frustrating as the deer went nocturnal a month agao and the rut wasn't yet ON. Still we prevailed because we'd catch a glimpse of a nice one here or there. To me its about body mass, the deer up there are very lean on that so seeing just another " Small" deer started getting me worried.
The snow we received and cold temperatures Thursday changed everything.
Now deer were moving because they were being chased by , other deer.
I seen more deer yesterday than I have in the total 3 weeks combined, all on a mission. My son seen what he described as the biggest he's ever seen, its still out there :).
In all that we built a plan for today. Go where the highest concentration of does are.
After 14 does, 1 spike and a 4 pointer passed through his stand, this came behind a doe.
He shot a beautiful 8pt last season and now he's got a 10 point to add to his and my memories.
It was a Fun day indeed and it only takes 1 to make it special.
I know there is a few 8' s another 10 and a 12pt still around that my cameras dont lie.

Absolutely super!

Experienced the same situation without the kill.

For the last three weeks of archery, had 26 different shooter bucks on camera, all at night. Not a single deer in the daylight.

The season goes out and there were five shooter bucks, including two taxidermy (and I don’t have a mounted deer because none have been big enough yet) worthy specimens, with 1.5 hours of each other last Wednesday during the middle of the day. At least one shooter buck every day during the daylight from Tuesday through Sunday.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Well- its Deer season- have passed some doe waiting for a bigun. That will last till late Dec in Muzzel season then- WATCH OUT LADIES.
Have a total of 10 tags between rifle and Muzzel on private lands  as well a shotgun and muzzle State lands and Bow.
Reality is one deer will likely be plenty.

Re: fun stuff 2018/12/01 09:52:02 (permalink)
Well I canceled on the real fun weekend stuff, like fishing and am now processing the last one of 3 deer.
Being solo for the most part, it takes me a bout 2 - 3 weeknights per. So's to say , it takes me awhile when I haven't been home on a weekend since October 7th and these deer were shot last Sunday
Alas, giving a full day and full steam ahead the processing will be done today.
Tomorrow is more not so fun stuff by reviving a car that has been in storage in my garage for almost 2 years. It basically only needs a complete 4 wheel brake job, i hope.

Is it ice season yet ?
At least fish are easy.

Have put this up in the past but its my favorite Hunting Story.
Was after a bigun here in Ct for a couple of years. could never connect but his sign was always around.
He left huge rubs and scrapes and had a great hoofprint too. Could always ID him from the others.
He would be gone in early gun season every year and come back after the rut in Muzzel season in Dec.
My method on that large piece was to walk a n/s ridgeline peeking over on occasion at East facing  bedding areas late season when snow was down.
Yep, there HE was, bed with 2 doe a very reasonable distance for the muzzel loader.
Put the hairs on him and pulled slowly.
POP--
Just the cap--
All Deer looked at me got up and got outa there.
My most memorable hunt.
Everything went as it shoulda w/o the drag. lol.
By the way-- he was everything I had imagined him to be- rack, big wide and thick.
Never saw him or his sign again.
It aint about the freezer all the time.

Humm, I'm having thoughts of giving the woods 1 more go with the xbow givin the warm temps on Saturday, 40 up there. Why not ? I get bored easily hanging around the house. 3 weekends away from afield is to long for me.
We do have a ice trip or scout planned for Sunday.

With a house full of 9 grandchildren ,my children and wives/husband along with a bunch of more family and friends, it's crazy here.
Is there any windows to jump out of, lol.

Fun stuff is all food we are eating tonight will be from our own hands. Hams, prime rib, pike cakes, veggies, applesauce, peaches, pears, homemade breads, pies and gosh knows what else we're throwing together.

A real Christmas..
Merry Christmas to all .
Peace and tuna

While Christmas is a time to receive gifts, the best ones for me are those passed down from generations.
Yesterday I was given one of those.
It was my mother's 1953 ( after researching the serial number) Remington 222 with peep sight. Getting rounds are very expensive and was lucky enough to get a box included.
There are still a few guns out there from my family that are hard to track down. Never been sold but hard to acquire. Only 2 remain on my search, a Rossi 15 shot pump 22 and a 1950 Remington 270.

Thanks, I'm stoked.
I think it was developed for military use, preceding the 22 mag, 223 and finally installed m16.
I'll take and cherish 66 year old generations well served gun. I know it put whitetail down as its center fire legal.

Also on my nice Santa list was a case of made in Mexico, ny.

Never found either lol.
Passed 'lesser' Deer waiting out their grand poppas to no avail.

Amazed, still hunting. Antlers started dropping off here almost 3 weeks ago.
I got deer every day now again in my back yard. Can't capitalize because seasons over, they know too.
It was s pretty good season for us . Any harvest of a mature deer is a win , 3 is fantastic and a lifetime deer is cream of the crop.

I already can't wait ( well after spring) till next whitetail season. Lots of new plans and ideas.

A friend who could not get out until the last week spent two days with a DMP permit and saw NO brown, hiked back out to his car at sunset on the last day of the season, and had two nice bucks and three does standing   out in the field adjacent to his car watching him case the gun.  Oh, yes , they know!

Lucky, I took my son practice driving out in the country.  On the way back a very nice 8 point with a heavy symmetrical rack ran along the car about thirty feet away.  I've seen many a buck and would say this was a good 140 class buck.
