Hate to be the bringer of bad tidings but...

Found out the hard way that there is some new posted water on Upper Elk. About 1/2-3/4 mile down stream from the parking lots at Sterretania. Anyone that fishes there knows about the piece that was already posted...same landowner just purchased the adjacent upstream piece and it's now closed to everyone. Please use my map for rough reference only. The arrows are my best guess of both pieces of ground. He was throwing everyone out over the weekend even though he doesn't currently have it clearly posted....he just closed on the land a week or so ago and hasn't had a chance to post it yet. Sorry for the bad news. It's getting harder and harder to lose the crowds and later in the day we got a good dose of what the future holds for us all. Tight Lines all...

Slowly yard by yard Elk Creek fishing evaporates. In all reality at least 60% or more of Elk is now either posted or just not worth fishing due to shallow shale bottom. The other tributary creeks are just as bad or worse. The Great Steelhead Alley fishing as it was once known as, has diminished steady and continues it's downward plunge.

    nope
Unless deemed a "navigable  waterway" (none of the Erie Pa  tribs are or ever will be) no walking the water

and in Ohio, even waters deemed navigable, you can't legally walk the creek in posted areas
    (different from Pa)
You can float them, but the minute your foot hits the creek bottom (even anchor technically) you're trespassing

No, it's just a bit further downstream from there.  The private drive between Doberman hole & Platz road.  Those properties, one of them is posted as of last weekend.

If the land was for sale, why didn't the PA Fish and Boat Commission buy it?  Or was it too expensive?

The PFBC has spent 2.185 million dollars securing 95,314 liner feet (18.05 miles) of tributary shoreline since 2005 (http://www.fishandboat.com/Transact/Grants/Documents/erieGrants/erie_operating_statement.pdf) .  This does not include development of parking areas, ADA accessible fishing areas/piers and improvements to boating facilities.

The NYSDEC has secured 0.5 miles of "new" public fishing access and 5 parking areas on Lake Erie in the last 10 years (http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lertmanageplan.pdf).

The PFBC makes an effort to secure as much public access on the tributaries as possible using the Lake Erie Permit funds.  These funds are also used for improving boating facilities and access areas and habitat improvement projects in the Lake Erie watershed.  Annual revenue from the Permit averages about $666,462 annually.

I'm wondering cause it's beens60s since I was in that area. Are them pretty nice parking areas and boat launches?

the game commish is under alot of pressure from the Erie fishermen. unfortunately we need the cooperation from the landowners. i personally  can say that this land that was posted was one of my favorites. never saw litter... by doing this the doberman owner brought more fishing traffic towards his house. its his decision though and we cant change it. thak god for the landowners on the right side of the creek by that section. spoke with most oif them and they have no intenetion to post the land. if it was up to the doberman owner, that hwhole section would be posted.

More crowds --> more yahoos --> more issues --> posted land.

Which means more people in other sections, and it all continues until the rest of the privately owned land is locked up.

I don't(well, didn't) fish that stretch as much as I do other sections, but I've heard that area received a heck of a lot more people this year than ever before. I can agree to that based on my couple trips attempting to fish that area this year, but honestly all of Elk was crazy this year.

Lost more access in Ohio this year too

Over the years that I've walked miles of Elk Creek I personally never seen much of a litter problem on middle and upper Elk, at least along the creek shores. What I have seen is a more trash around the parking areas mostly. That's still an issue today. Remember some of these areas have been posted since the 80's even before the crowds showed up. I think it's more of a privacy issue now with the large population of fishermen daily. Now with less areas the choices of the fishermen will be even more limited. It's basically a self destructive future!

Unfortunately no! Simply put, without all the laws and details on creeks, in Pa. the owner's boundary or property lines include the creek bottom too. If it's posted your not allowed to enter by land or water. Technically you could pass thru in a boat or float, no stopping. Every state has different laws on water access.

So a person that buys property with their hard earned money and posts it is a d-bag?? U must live with your parents.. if you ever move out and purchase a piece of real estate wait n see how u feel about people stomping on it... btw the answer is no.. due to it not being deemed navigable

    http://www.dcnr.state.pa....cument/dcnr_009715.pdf

If it isnt on this list the CREEKBEDS are private and spoken for (pending permission, posted signs and PFBC access)

Even more clarity from fish and boat commission.. a little research goes a long way....

It was a good question but thats where the problem is... everyone is trying to find every little loop hole to fish one little piece of water when there is no loophole and the people need to accept the fact the land is posted and it is not fishable and just forget about it...
