Feb 11/12

Hit the tribs this past weekend and it was disappointing to say the least.  Also the few that I got were in the very low 20 inch range. All were older fish with one fresh jack.
The water conditions could not have been better, it was that nice green color from the snow melt run off until Sunday morning when they blew out.
Lots of guys out Saturday but only saw one other guy catch and land a fish.
Seems like between 11am and 3pm was the best time.  Warmest part of the day.
Trout run had only a hand full of fish in it and only 1 tried to get over the falls in the 15min that I watched.  None trying to make there way up from the lake.

Last years spring run was poor and from what I saw this year should be more of the same.
More bait and tackle shops will be shutting down if this keeps up just like Trout Run Bait and Tackle.
Sorry for the bad report. Sad but true.

    Yes, sometime last fall.

I fished with my 13 year old son and his friend Saturday.  We found a pretty steady bite for most of the day, and they both tangled with 10-15 fish throughout the day, but only landed a couple.

They fly fished.  I dunked bait.  None of us had much success on drifting the standard flies or baits.  Almost all of our action was on jigs, streamers, zonkers and buggers.  Big stuff.

Nice job... Some people can catch, most cannot. Best time of the year. Headed out tomorrow, hopefully the bad weather will keep most off of the streams

You may remember some of the discussion here regarding that place & their work towards closing off one particular section of Elk Creek for their guides & clients only?

They were warned that word would spread about their efforts towards limiting public access & that it would affect their business negatively.  They laughed it off & tough talked multiple posters here over it both on the phone & via emails.  Things like "if we didn't do it somebody else would".   I can't say I'll lose a second of sleep over their business failing.

There are fish around I hooked 24 Saturday...been averaging 20 fish a day.
That said seems like more of the same numbers are down like last few years really got work for them at times.
I have caught a lot of lil ones but also been finding some in the 28-30 inch range each time out.
Caught my 1st sucker for the year yesterday its guna be an early spring I guese...WCW

    I do remember that.

I'm a bait chucker, and would give them my business once in awhile until that happened.  After that, I'd drive right past to go to Poor Richards.  Not that it was a big sacrifice to drive an extra couple of miles, but I think many felt the same way.

Good on ya.  I fish flies, but I used to buy materials from them up until that point.  I also used to help organize a group 4 day weekend, 40-45 guys, per year most from out of state.  We'd send people there & poor Richards until that info came out, then it was 100% poor Richards.

Yep, my son and his friend can catch.  I could not.  Haha.  They definitely out fished me on Saturday.

I was surprised that the crowds weren't too bad for a day like that in mid February.  We had plenty of room.  Imagine this weekend will be a zoo with a long weekend for many.

With the forecast in the 50's. It will be bad. That's why I am headed up tomorrow, staying overnight, but I think the slush will be bad Thursday morning. I probably gamble all night then take an early look at the stream before daylight. With the temps, I'm sure it will be an early trip home.

I don't ever remember much of a Spring run in Pa

moldy beat to death holdovers, jacks and a handful of Ohio strays.
The great days I recall in late winter/Spring PA were the times I happened  on a  bunch of dumb fresh jacks

Steelhead_alley, yes that was me that spoke to you at the tackle shop. Glad you got into a few before it blew out.
Here is a good article for you even though its NY.  http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lertmanageplan.pdf
If you see pods of fish anywhere besides Trout run consider yourself lucky.

yep your advuse worked. you were right when you said the creeks were rising fast. when we first got there, walnut had a great green tint... after about 10 minutes i hooked up. i lost  the fish because i missed the fish with the net and the nice male got away. it was a fresh male right from the lake. after about 15 minutes after losing that fish, i hooked into another nice male. once again i missed it with the net and it got off. terrible day with my net skills. didnt matter they were going back anyway. the spring run is gone in erie. many holdovers though.

Lower Elk. Half Jacks/25% Fresh/25% older.

20+ landed. Saw a little more than that landed by other fisherman.
