Jug fishing in pa

What are the rules on jug fishing in pa? I just moved from north carolina and we would clean up on the catfish while jug fishing. I have checked the PA fish site and have seen nothing on jug fishing being not allowed.

well im not sure but i know the limit is two lines..so setting out a ton of jugs is probably out of the question...i think there might be something about the lines being under immediate control of the owner but im not sure..

I do not think using jugs or trot lines for catfish is legal in PA.

I wish they would have it posted somewhere ... I have seen where it says you need to be within a reasonable distance to your line and the number of lines allowed in the water, but i'm sure thats for rod and reel... they allow you more lines and different equipment for ice fishing don't they?

Jug fishing as practiced in the South is not legal in Pennsylvania. No more than 2 rods or 2 handlines under your immediate control. Ice fishing allows more tipups but again under your immediate control. You set out a line for anything other than turtles and leave the area you can get fined.

You got that right ! Although I did have fun a couple years ago, made it all the way to the regional manager, asking if I could ase 5 tip ups mounted on styrofoam rings on open water Regs stated what ice gear you were allowed to use, but never stated that you had to use them on ice only! I knew the answer of course, was just in one of those moods to annoy someone "up the ladder". I think the last guy I spoke with wanted to suggest a "handicapped licence " for me.!!

Jug and trot line fishing are absolutely illegal in PA and I for one am glad of it. I have fished the Santee Cooper area of South Carolina for the past 15 years and have seen the near devistation of the "large catfish" in several of those lakes. On one particular day when we were just touring the lake we counted over 100 trot lines(50 hooks per line) and we only covered about 10 percent of the lake. I've watched people go out day after day and bring in hundreds of pounds of fish daily to their assembly line cleaning stations to clean and bag their catch. They had to be selling their fish because no one family could ever eat that much fish.

It was not uncommon to go fishing with rod and reel and catch several 20, 30, or 40 pound catfish, but the past 5 years rod and reel fishing has slipped to 1 to 5 pounders with a possible 10 or 15 pounder once in a while.

No need for jugs or trot lines in PA. They are also a hazard to other fishermen and boaters.

    Just my two cents.

If the pfc would say no jug fishing, someone would ask if it was o.k. to use plastic bottles because they are not jugs. Then you ask why there are so many complicated regs.  sam

Here is a link from the FAQ section of the PAFBC website about trot lines, which is similiar to jug fishing.

I believe you could use jugs as long as they were kept close, you couldn't leave them unattended or overnight.
My dad did some in Tennesse when i was a kid in Dale Hollow Lake, got some cats, turtles and had something big snap, not cut 100 lb test, maybe a big gar ?

I was setting jugs some years back at lake Le Boeuff. Had a 12ft boat 5 horse motor and 50 jugs rigged and baited with 4-6 inch blue gill. I just finished my last trip around the island I noticed a wco truck parked at the ramp by the bar and two more parked at the boat launch by the camp grounds. As I putted into the ramp a couple more officers pulled in. Things got a little tense for a moment as the officer explained that some one called in and reported nets being set at lake LeBoeuff. Sure enough, with those jugs set at 20 ft. intervals around the island it did look like a big net. As I was getting the full search and seizure maneuver, I explained that I was jugging for snapping turtles, all the jugs had name tags, over 1 inch from shank to barb hooks. One wco insisted that i take him out to see. The jugs  were not in that long and on the way out one jug was heading across the lake . We pulled up along side I asked the wco if he could grab the jug on the way by and he did. It was worth every second of interrogation just to see the wco face as i dropped one ****ed off, 40 lb hissing snapping prehistoric monster into the front seat right next to him.
