SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2015

Didn't realize how long it's been since I fished the reservoir; glad I had my Nuvi GPS so I could find the place.   Hit the water at 1:00 pm and couldn't have had a nicer day to be on the lake.  Pretty quiet boater moat wise until about 4:00 pm and that's when I found out my little boat might be able to withstand "two footers" on Erie; should I ever want to hit the big lake.

As for fishing, I've certainly had better days on Shenango and, after speaking with several other anglers, I wasn't alone in wondering when the 'bite' would turn on.  Fished til dark then, released 5 barely keeper size crappy from the live well.  Ulta Light rod and reel baited with 1/16 oz jigs tipped with tube bodies of various colors produced the crappy in 12 to 15 fow.  Crank baits of various types and sizes tossed toward and, parallel to the shore line produced nothing but, a sore shoulder.

Sure woulda liked to have been able to stay out under the big old moon hangin' overhead; even planned on hitting Pymie for some night time angling but, for reasons unknown, I trailer-ed the boat and drug my tired old donkey home.

Oh well, tomorrow is another day, if I can drag my dead @zz out of bed before noon (it's a beetch being retired) maybe I'll try again.

Stay tuned.

Thanks guys, was just great to get back on the water.

Marco sorry to hear about your back, that has to be miserable and after fishing yesterday I would agree, best to rest to play another day!
Wishing you a quick recovery.

Captain hook, 6:00 am...........     seriously?     Was hoping to see some action in the evening, did see several small pods of what I think were shad feeding on the surface but no "water busting" by anything.    Maybe try it again this evening and stay a little later under the moon.  Might even try trolling some new lures I picked up at the bank yesterday, they come in size one, size five and, and colored similar to the water.   Sorrry couldn't help myself.

Gotta get.

Boyz was out and about the other night reminding some boaters about their navigation lights.  Fortunately for me they had to make several stops before reaching my location and I had my lights turned on.  Seems some captains didn't realize that bow and stern lights are required (at sunset) when the boat is not anchored.  Far as I know those skippers received only a sermon.

Nav lights (green and red front) on while moving, stern light (white, highest point on craft) on always.  This isn't that hard.

We were using a lantern on a shepherd's hook on the back of the pontoon but I found a harness for the proper light pole in some parts I had laying around and wired it up.  That's how easy it is to light your boat.  People are just lazy.

NIGHT OPERATION AND LIGHTS
All vessels must show required running lights between the hours of sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility, such as fog and heavy rain. A sailboat operating under power and sail must display the proper running lights for a powerboat. Navigation lights are restricted to the colors red, green and white. No lights of any type except for the required navigation lights may be displayed. Navigation lights are designed to identify the type of boat and its situation (underway, direction of travel, at anchor, etc.) on the water. Boats underway include drifting boats. Night boaters should carry spare bulbs, fuses, batteries and a flashlight.
The navigation lights required for boats are determined by the boat’s length and whether it is powered by machinery, sail, paddles or oars.

********************************************************************************************

A very nice waterways patrolman explained this next law to me around 10:30pm on Pymie one night.   Heh heh hehhh.... ooooops!

DOCKING LIGHTS: It is illegal to use docking lights, while underway, except when docking and the boat is traveling at slow, no wake speed and is within 100 feet of approaching a dock, a mooring buoy or the shoreline. A docking light is a flood or spotlight type of light permanently installed or permanently mounted on a motorboat that is used to illuminate a boat’s forward course of travel.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2015 2015/09/10 23:35:28 (permalink)
Okay, I did it!  I took the Captain's advice and got on the water early.  Low pressure and rain forecast for later in the day so, I thought the fish might turn on and bring about a good bite.  Couldn't have ask for better conditions with a gentle wind out of the west providing a mild chop and great drifting speed.  It is two days after a major three day weekend holiday and it was nice to join only boats occupied by other anglers.  I wouldn't even begin to think what kind of a beating the lake took over such a hot, end of summer, weekend holiday.

Anyway, the lake has had two days to calm down and with rain and low pressure in the forecast I sez to myslf; "self" we need to get on the water early.  Packed my lunch, hooked the boat and, headed for Shenango with visions of fishes tugging and stretching my line.

Launched the boat from the trailer, parked my vehicle and, pulled from the dock heading to my favorite fishing hole as the bells tolled 11:00.  What.........?  It's early for me so,  I tossed twister tails, chucked crank baits and, tried a couple of spinners throwing to and parallel with the shore line.  I fished humps, bumps, shallow, deep, points, piers and, couldn't even catch a snag.

I spoke with some very nice people who were catching some small crappy on minnows and I was marking something resembling fish on my sonar  but, I can only say, stupid fish!

End of story!

Shenango at daylight today...............

Tossed this only slab back. Shenango's algae problem has the whole lake cloudy green. Not good visibility for fishing ....at least that's my excuse.

The only problem with your excuse; I didn't think of it first.:-P

Do these pictures mean ya had some good luck and remembered where ya left your camera?

Ya know what they say about the two signs if getting old 1. Your memory begins to fade and 2; ummmm, huhh I seemed to have forgotten.:-\

Nice pics. as usual except for, that nasty looking dude in the one.:-D

I think that camera is history, but you know me and my pictures, I have an older spare. Shenango is like fishing in a giant pea soup bowl..... man that green stuff is bad. On another note Lake Erie is so high that the mouths of all the creeks are backed up with high water and little current. You go up stream above Rt. 5 and the creeks are a trickle !

Fished Shenango a couple times last week when we had that warm spell. Crappie bite was pretty impressive both days. Wednesday i fished with my youngest brother, Rich, and we caught over 80 fish in a little over three hours. Used BG baby shads under 1/2 oz weights to hold them down and trolled .7 mph [ gps ]. Kept a limit for his in-laws, here from Vegas. Next day i took my oldest brother, Bill, out. Same area, same program and kept 35 for him. Fish were scattered around in 12 ft but were real aggressive. Good time with a couple of my brothers.

***BOAT CAPSIZES IN SHENANGO RIVER LAKE***
CLARK — Officials and emergency responders are currently working to retrieve a capsized boat from the Shenango River Lake, according to a representative at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office at the lake, who provided information by phone around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The boat, reported with at least one occupant who was duck hunting, capsized Wednesday morning

****SHENANGO RIVER LAKE UPDATE****
CLARK — John Kolodziejski, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at The Shenango River Reservoir, said the boat that two waterfowl hunters were using was recovered after it capsized around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, near the Parker's Landing boat launch.
Kolodziejski said that the unidentified hunters were both wearing the required lifejackets, and were able to make it the shore, adding that one of the gentleman was waiting by his truck, while the other had not been able to make it further than the shore. Kolodziejski explained that exhaustion from swimming in the 50 degree water was the cause.
Kolodziejski said that South Pymatuning Township Volunteer Fire Department dispatched its utility vehicle, which transported the man on a stretcher from the shoreline to the awaiting ambulance crew from McGonigle's, who then transported the man to a local hospital for observation, but believes that there were no injuries.
"Had they not been wearing the required lifejackets, we may be facing a completely different scenerio," Kolodziejski said by phone mid-morning Wednesday.
Pa. Fish and Boat Commission waterways conservation officers also assisted.
Check the Thursday edition of The Record-Argus for the complete story.

Thanks for posting the story Mikastorm and certainly glad the men made it to shore.

Don't know what the full details of the accident are but, I know the wind is just ripping by my place at times. The Clark area is known to get high damaging winds and was even struck by a tornado around Nov. 11, 2002.

Thanks again for the posting and may it serve as a reminder to all!
