Smart or chicken??

I was at the Walnut ramp ready to put my 19- Tracker Targa in to go out to the trench. A dude with a maybe 16' Lund aluminum put in with three people maybe 200# each and goes out into 2-3' waves with about a foot of bow out of the water. I watch with amasement as he goes out of the channel. He goes out with water splashing over the boat everywhere. We watch as he almost disappears into the lake. I put my boat in and we go out past the breakwater and have waves as high as the gunnels and busting through some that drench the windshield. It was so bad that we went back in. My question is was I smart or chicken. That guy had some big ##lls I thought. I felt it was very foolish. We were scared for them. Maybe someone knows him or he is on the forum.  This was on 7/14.

SMART!!!  If you are not comfortable in those water conditions then dont go, its more about what the captain can handle than the boat.

Could see it either way, all a matter of skill, personal comfort, and to each his own, on the other hand, could understand yer concern, and if something did happen, the rescuers thatd have to risk their lives to get him out of there.

Just like ice fishing, and the safe ice debates that seem to go on every year. Won't go out on less than 4 inches, mayybeee 3.5 if its rock solid and clear, yet every year theres some guys who are out on 2 ish, saying how you gotta get out on first ice for the best ice fishing of the year. On the other hand, Ive been out on early season days I was comfortable with, and come home to ice shanty reports with people saying it wasnt safe yet.

Yea John I know what you mean. I ice fish also and have been boating for a lot of years. I been know to hang it out once in a while too. I just don't think erie is the place to do it. I thought it was very risky. I put the boat in twice yesterday just to try and both times put it back on the trailer.

Smart.  People act like boats don't actually sink.  We were on pymie last spring and thought it was sketchy for a 20' pontoon, while the place was full of 12 and 14' flat bottomed tubs with 2 or 3 people in them.  Sure you can walk to shore from most spots in that lake, but 60 degree water will kill you in a hurry.  No amount of catching fish is worth risky boating in my book.  No thanks.

Fishing on Erie is no way safe in a 16' boat in 3 ft. waves plus three guys ! Erie is not like your local inland lakes very easy to take a wave inside with those conditions. How does anybody enjoy bouncing and holding the sides all day and trying to fish is beyond me.
