That's one of the best early striper spots on the coast, Gerry. You can sometimes find schoolies there in April.  South County is also one of the very few places you can have a real  shot at false albacore and bonita from shore. Better have a good drag!!!!
I've yet to try it, but one of the neatest ways to surf fish originated in that area. Guys take a hardwood ball about the size of a baseball with eyelets screwed in it and use it as a bobber/ casting device to throw flies. Typically, rhody flat wings, but I've seen Deceivers and small clousers. Sometimes the fish are on samller bait (like sand eels or the myriad forage that lives in the salt ponds) and this is a great way to throw lonnnnnnnnng casts with the right offereing.

Lake Ontario Report 7/25-26
While I was away in RI enjoying some beach time my crew took the Daisy out on a Great Lake Adventure.. Wish I had better news and pics to post but it was a skunk fishing wise from the Mexico bay all the way to Oswego harbor.. Perfect weather , perfect seas but no fish from them.. Little chatter on the radio was reported as things were mostly quiet by the many other boats out.. The complaint from others was the storm on Friday screwed the progression that started last week, I don't know, I just think it's getting, going to be another tough year IMO..
Either way a good time was reported as always and the water was delightful for swimming :)
The boat and report will be silent this coming weekend and I cant wait to get back aboard on 7/31  !!!

Looks like you hit it out of the park by going to RI Rich.  I didn't do too bad by seeing Neil Young at Bethel Woods Friday night and New Riders of The Purple Sage & Electric Hot Tuna Saturday at The Capital.  As always the summer is flying by.  Enjoy everyone.

Don't know about a home run but it was an easy triple.. Friends, Family, good food and great times..
Seems every time Lukas comes to the area , I'm in RI.. Sure wanted like heck to catch the Neil & POTR show in Bethel, JEALOUS .. Almost came back home from RI when lukas played my home town last year.. Oh well, water under the bridge.  If he cancels sundays show then it's burn me once, my fault, burn me twice, yours, I won't get burned again.. Still a slight chance I may take a quickie trip out fri-sat to the Mae if the weather continues to play nice..

Shot up Sat evening- did the yard and trimmed Sunday-bugged out as soon as I finished later Sun afternoon.
Just a quick work trip.
Cant stand an unkept place.
Real nice sunny weather in Richland for a change- Saw some distant dark clouds coming in from the lake and heard boomers  later in Sun AM but they went elsewhere.
River was up a bit with many rubber floats.

Reports are saying that some of the charters are limiting out on kings and back to the dock early.  I hope you hit the mother lode when you return.  Good luck.

Tuna, there are fish being caught in all sizes in varrying depths from what im hearing and seeinh.2 weeks ago we had two mid 40's morning in a row... All I thought about was salmon... Now a cool breezy late day today after a sharp wsw wind that blew surface water up towards thousand islands... All i thought this evening was salmon with purple summer blossoms and crisp lake brezes..No expert here, but yes its coming... Just wait til a heavy east wind throws us for a loop for a day or so... Its in mother natures hands after that happens :)

Keep those local reports coming Andy- think we are all getting itchy for the 'beginning'.
August walks on the SR are right around the corner and if the water levels continue like they have been this Summer  it could be OK for earlies  to begin in a few weeks.
That first DSR 'one of our guys saw one' report should be upcoming in a few short weeks.

Trev, quite honestly I'm not.. I fear the summer is flying by all to fast and looking at things only have 6 more weekends to probe the depths of the Great Lake Ontario, toss a full week in there at the end of Aug..
For sure I will bring the Daisy Mae back to port next season after the Mighty Hudson Striper run..
Don't mean disrespectful of the good river stewards and walkers here but I have had my fill of the "runs", even steelhead as the hardwater suites my fancy better now ..
I wish everyone that still gets pumped the best of times and tight lines :)

Summers not even half over!!! Tuna you're gonna have plenty of time with your august trips bud... 6 days at the end!!!! Can't wait to get out again with you man. I have a feeling the Daisy Mae has earned her karma and is gonna have a banner month in August ;)

Trev, august hikes are great... Been a favored activity of mine since my second season back in 91... I do look forward to future seasons with less internet hype these days... Or atleast hope

I will be in Florida sept 22-27 then Pittsburg on biz oct 7&8
Will try like heck to squeeze 2 days in , most likely 9-30 & 10-1 as I surly miss the great company :)
Other then those 2 days , that will be my extent of the SR unless a wild ambition happens in Nov ..

Well Gerry I can assure you there won't be any aboard the daisy . Its a no snake zone . Lol
Can't stay away any longer . With this weeks west wind , I'm heading out with a newbie tomorrow for a quickie trip.
Lets hope all these dreams of salmon , steelhead , trout and char that have been dancing in my head decide to make the rods dance too.
Report to follow sat eve or Sunday morning :

Report 7/25
I just couldn't stay away for 2 weeks straight so we made a quick overnight trip up Friday eve and fished until about 3 pm yesterday then headed back home..
Stopped at the river house / (old log cabin site ) for a bite to eat Friday night.. I think it was my first time in there since the Log cabin burned down.. Not a bad place at all.. Food was good and they even had my favorite beer.Busch, which I find rare in a tavern but then it seems most of them places up there have it.. Another big for the area from me :)
I stayed up late doing some clean up and organizing on the boat and finally hit the rack around midnight.. Sleeping like a baby all the sudden I here tons of commotion outside and it was still dark.. Well , those crazy lake fishers are early risers I say.. At 4:30 am the whole marina was alive with people and boats firing up and heading out.. Out of the rack I rolled and had a "chat" with these guys from Pa who decided to block our vehicle in and using our vehicle as a park bench while the hung around their boat.. Things got straightened out and off they went so we made the very early coffee run then out to the big pond we went with the massive amount of other trollers..
It sure looked like salmon season out there.. Did our usual run out by the stack and joined the crowds.. Radio was squawking like crazy, fish on, 2 in the box, yadda yadda , yadda  .. If I hear draggin' fly again I'm gonna rip the radio out of my boat, lol... Just kidding, they always seem to be catching fish..
Troll, troll and darn troll some more without a sniff... Don't know what the heck we are doing wrong but everyone was catching salmon but us, we weren't even marking fish..
Back to port we ran about 9am to put some much needed fuel in the boat.. Gets a little scary when you are 9 miles out and the fuel gauge says 1/4 to E left in the tank.. Seems we are always having to make that mid morning fuel run every sat.. Marinas/fuel don't open until 9am and I have no idea how we are using so much fuel every time out.. Next season I am putting that 15 hp kicker I have on the boat, just wasn't enough time this season..
After dropping another $100. bill in the tank , which is about 1/2 tank ( woulda thought all those $100. bills would eventually add up to a full tank but it never seems to happen that way) we went back out to get in the conga line.. Funny thing is all those boats were GONE .. The chatter kept up on the radio and the boats moved out to 400fow, we were in the 200' range..
Troll, troll and troll we did and not marking anything so I decided to go with my gut and head into the 125fow range (7 miles off shore) where I always seem to mark fish.. Yes indeed , they were there.. TONS of marks on the screen and then a rod fires !!! , A shaker and off it was, another rod fires and same result then BANG this time it was a solid thump and the drag took off.. My buddy grabs the rod and had an epic battle with a real nice 25# dime bright king that broke the surface about 100 yards out.. The Spiny fleas were terrible and I had to keep clearing the line so he could reel it in but in it came ..
His first lake Ontario salmon which proved to him , yes, there are fish in that darn lake after all !!
Figured we would end the trip on that high note and head back to port to button things up and head home..

Things Learned:
1. Never give up
2. There is a very good thermocline established now at 50' down.
3.The fish are there in good numbers as the cleaning station did 300 fish yesterday..

That a wrap for this weeks Great Lake Adventure.. Heading to Ma tonight to catch my only facebook friend, Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real !!
Be back on the boat in 5 days :)

I see that I got another request
Don't take it personal (my kid did, lol) but I really don't do facebook, only reason I joined last year was to Ask Lukas a question about the show he was doing (cancelled)  in Ct last year.. I keep up on his page and that's about it.. It's a running joke among my friends that I only have 1 friend , Lukas.. It's pretty much going to stay that way.lol
Heading out the door to do some outlet stores in Lee then on to the Iron Horse :)

Ps.
Jack, there were a bunch of charters and a few tourneys going on yesterday (my marina had 1 also) so the fish cleaning guy was busy..  He Said it seemed like Salmon River season with lines and all to get fish cleaned..
