What Steelhead ???

Got in Thurs late in the rain and temps in the 30s. It snowed a coupla times over the past few days but today (sun) it got into the 40s- still snowed again.
Friday crowds not bad at all  anyplace except for  upper Vines to the Church hole. Didn't fish it but watched the Church conga line and only saw a very few dark  winter looking Steel. Hey - whats with all the  weights and sacs in the Zone ??
Saturday only picked up some chubs. Crowd up river looked like King season but it thinned a lot as ya went down.
Always figured if the chubs were out and active it was likely no larger fish are around= even if they aren't being chased its seems likely the predator fish would keep them in hiding.
Never even saw a fish of any kind running  in the river fishing lower vines and mid river. Covered a lot of water too.
One guy said he hit fresh Kings in one of the Sandys Friday.
DARN -those numbers of Steel a week or two back musta run up to winter holds with very few following behind.
DSR reports are nice but a small pod  here and there running in gets so spread over the miles of river that ya don't even notice them.  Cept for a lucky few who happen to be in the right spots at the right time  or know of regular holds and work them hard.
Had to be  putting  stuff in front of unseen fish in deep runs here and there but no takers-thousand casts and only the chubs. Think the cold front of several days in the 30s mighta had some affect too.
Glad I got up to winterize as there is a polar vortex supposed to hit there mid week with temps into the 20s.
Likely it for me for quite a while.
Good luck to all going up- if ya want a fish instead of a fishing experience ya may as well get in a line upriver.

R3g3 I think that was the words for 2013. Why now a days the weathermen have to have all these fancy words what happened to the day when we were told it was just going to get cold?

Arctic air is what I remember hearing. Trev, my son caught a creek chub also and ended up having some other smaller ones nibbling his fly. Made me think the same thing... That fish are not there in "big" numbers.

Andy, you may recall that November is my favored time of year- in this dizzy season there were no fish whatsoever in my favored spots. Can generally find some Steel behind late spawning Kings and a few Hos around those places. Not this time---zip for any species cept chubs.
Thought with the late run of Kings a week or so back with nice numbers of Hos and Steel that this Nov would be great --not to be- not even close.
Even if the weather had turned them off a bit one would think ya could at least cover water mid to upper and see something sitting there ---nope.

Good luck in the woods, HT, I'll see ya on the hard water. I'm glad you got a coho. The couple I hooked last trip made it for me. They give you a run for your money. You should be use to the beginner's luck thing by now, just shows you're a good teacher.

after the cold front that moved in recently, the day was a bit chilly, with occasional snowflakes that did not stick . . . however, clients reported an improvement in fishing over the past couple of days . . . lower as well as mid sections of the river produced Steelheads today, with the middle section producing much better . . . reports of fishing outside of the DSR was fairly dismal, with prospective customers checking in throughout the afternoon to see if there were any fish in the river, and at the DSR specifically . . . today, those answers were "yes" and "yes" . . . so far, no reports from any clients who
have fished the upper sections today . . .

The lone bright spot in the upper  river was reported to be behind Tailwater Lodge, with guests there getting into steelhead waking flies on the surface. Though snow is expected for the next week, the DSR should remain  sunny with above average temps.

Certainly, when I am having a successful afternoon with fish in front of me and biting, I always leave and go make inquiries of an overpriced snobfarm, and tell them how poor things are upriver!  Just to handicap myself, I also always leave fish to find fish!  And I would never consider the free fishing I find to be in any way as desirable as what I get for dropping the price of a nice evening with my wife  for second hand access (the people staying  at lodges and the guides get the first run spots.) and death marches in either direction.  Of course, it is better in the gold plated petting zoo, just ask Chartist, he only ended up elbow bending at the Altmar because of the gourmet cooking and extensive ale selection!  Oh, and American businesses, especially ones run by politicians, have never engaged in truth bending or self promotion, they are only doing this for the good of the fishermen and the fishery.

Man, people seem to never let go of the old dead horse of private property. Id love to see someone claim that they would open their private property to the public if it was "theirs"...

I don't argue with private property, but the water flowing over it belongs to the people of the State of New York, and the fish swimming up it were stocked with user fees paid by fishermen.  And they are the ones who posted the snooty report.  Personally I would close the river from the black hole to route 3 the way things have gone with the senator's preserve, the "we'll keep it affordable for the average joe" story we heard when they opened it has  turned into just so much more fertilizer.

I don't even understand why "Crown grants" still convey rights, I recall learning in High School history about something that happened back around 1776 that took away all that crown power. It is one thing to use your fishing license to access the fish from your property, it is an entirely different thing to turn a public fishery into a private commercial enterprise.

    Just sayin.....
