And again today, and while it sounds pretty lousy down there, it does sound like more fish are building in the estuary, and sliding up onto town and further at night.  So maybe , like everything else this year (my wife bought peaches at the public market last week, but there was no surplus of apples yet) IT IS JUST LATE!

Watched the circus in the town pool yesterday saw people playing fish some even had two to three on the stringer. Pineville tackle had a group bring in 3 Browns from the ballpark one weighted in at 12lbs. By no means I would dropped what you doing to come fish but it's getting there.

Seems to be that with the water level that we have fish are having an easy time moving.
Instead of either having to fight heavy current and dropping behind breaks or moving from deep hole to deep hole and stopping for the day they are blowing up into town and beyond every night leaving the lower end with dribs and drabs.

Word is those that enjoy the kind of action the Trestle provides have a good number of fish to whip at.
The ballpark has seen fish for weeks.
There were fish in the LFZ last week and I am sure the upper.
Not saying its been a real run as we know one but that small waves have been moving every night as they feel the urge.

No big numbers but if you want to get in a mid river choke point you will have fish go by you every day.
Even the rippers don't get big numbers under these conditions and a real fisherman fishing will have even less since there is no stacking and none of the aggressive holding position mentality in the fish.
At least they are not so shell shocked so they retain their curiousity if you put something interesting (read not sponge or 2/0 octopus hooks) past them in a natural drift.

Good luck all.

I get no sense that DEC is worried, and the run is the source of eggs for the whole system.  So they must be getting what are perceived to be enough fish hitting the holding pens at the hatchery.  TB's low water explanation makes perfect sense.  Things are just late and  happening around a different schedule than the "run all day" that folks have gotten used to. Could be a good year to explore all those long flats up from 2A.  Sad that the fish are just blowing by all that expensive water down low.

Re: Fri Sat report 2014/09/25 08:33:58 (permalink)
I would calll it medium water.
Not so low as to keep them going hole to hole slowly upriver and not so high as to exhaust them so they have to dodge from one current break to the next slowing them down.
I believe they are not schooling in the estuary because as they come in they find plenty of water to move through when they are ready.
Not like the old days when they would wait all weekend with the tap closed and when the flow hit around 3 on mon they would flood the river.
When they closed the dam at 5 and as the water dropped they would find a hole and wait till the next electric usage.
Just a steady trickle moving at will.

2B sounds like you nailed it! From what is happening there should be fish waiting for me in my "secret" spot next week.

Going back next week no matter what then making a quick turn around and a few days later up for several more.
Not too overly excited after  reading reports on a variety of forums from guys who were there-seems if you happen to hit the right spot at the right time ya MIGHT see or catch one. Some who seem to know whats up are still going OO for a few days at a time. Not very encouraging for most folks yet although it seems to have picked up a bit IMHO.

Seems fish may even be holding in the blackhole through the day and moving late afternoon in to the evening as town has been quite productive in the past week in the evening. Definitely a unique year. More spectators perspective for me rather than hands on. May wet a line this weekend.

River numbers seem to be identical to the lake numbers in the summerto present. Fish are everywhere but NOT IN comsistent NUMBERS. Upper river should be a play ground come mid October. Maybe it will keep the trout down lower for once in a long time...

3 fish total... No more than 1 trout. Any combination of salmon with no more than 3 total... If 1 trout is kept only 2 salmon(king or coho) are allowed

English is not the first language at the trestle....It's fun for laughs, but the risk of a car breakin makes it not worth while.

Snagging is what's spoken there and you speak it with a  very loud voice. I'm sure I'll see a few red octopus hooks to pull out of fish upriver. At least the guys at the trestle admit to what they're doing and use cheap rods  and drive much less. What a waste of gas and equipment.

Met a guy this past summer here in Ct who said he hasnt been back to the SR since they outlawed the Cricket and 'ruined the fishing'- went on to tell me how he used to make Crickets at home with a mold for himself and his buddies who also don't  go back..
Didn't say what I was thinking--- they  aint comin back anyhow so- why bother.

I'm way behind on the threads so a little catch up.
Limits on the SR are 3 in combination or single species , only 1 can be a rainbow ( steelhead ) . Once you hit 3 its over for kill .
Some things do turn me off, tiny flies and 1/0 hooks . Nuff said.
Thanks for the report ugly and glad you found some fun
Hope 3 fan, DB, RG and anyone else has as much .
