Quick trip to Oswego

Made a quick trip up to Oswego on Monday afternoon to fish Tuesday.

Up until my arrival the Spring brown fishing had been good but the weather conditions on Tuesday put the fish off their bite.  The inclement weather wasn't supposed to roll in until after 4 PM but arrived nearly eight hours early.  Intermittent showers gave way to a steady rain about 11 AM.

Managed to boat a couple of nice fish but it was spotty at best.  Boated what was the smallest King I have ever caught, approximately 7".  Took a small Coho that wasn't a whole lot bigger along with a half dozen other browns.  Probably had more quick strikes and misses than boated fish.  All fish released to fight another day.

Had I known the bite was going to be off I might have opted to take my chances on steelhead but the river was heavily stained and running at 17K+.

Bugged out and headed home after the trip because the SR was still running 3K+.

At least you got out for a bit and boated a few.   The Oswego is a river that I don't fish as much as I should, especially for browns.   It always seems whenever I go up there the SECOND I step in the water the siren goes off and they raise it.

Still a lot of steel in the Oswego.  The guy I fished with did very well there today.  Water came down to 14K.

Super nice fish Gerry.. Hope like heck to get into some of that brown action next spring . You'll have to show me the ropes. Oswego for me was always love - hate..
Finally work has ceased and its time to go fishing.
Lots of Nickel Creek will be playing on Gilligans island , lets hope the stripers like it.

Thanks for sharing the pics of beautiful fish :

Well tried my hand at browns today and managed one, wind came up and rowing the boat became tough in the wind, with the wind piece of cake. Talked to a guide who was loading same time as us he was down in front of the salmon and crushed them think he said 42. Another boat we talked to caught 2. Got some good info and cant wait for the lake boat to be ready rowing is a young mans game. My buddy Steve with the only one.

got till june from what im told tuna plenty of time for you to get up here.

Been pretty sick lately AND I had to work today.  I may try to get up tomorrow, but feeling how I do now I just may be resting all day.

I don't know how the worms would work on the lake for trout but I bet there are other fish that would hit them. Now I know for sure the Steel will eat them in the river, used them years past with a lot of success.Of course once they start dropping back they'll eat anything they can get in their mouth.

Know for sure steel will eat them used them myself many years ago, problem was they would freeze up unless I kept them inside my neopreens. Fished them under floats long before floats became the rage.

Used garden hackle for years up there bottom drifting  for Steel. Seemed to me that they fished  pools better than swinging fast waters. Slower delivery was always my guess.
That said working them behind rocks and jams in faster waters did very well too. Still use them often.
Never had all that much luck using them under a float but some guys do well that way.
Bottom drifting  a pool a year or so ago with them and got nothing-moved out so the guy behind me could get a chance -he  hit a dropback  first cast drifting  a bobber with a crawler lol.

    Jerry nice fish!!!

John, I've been dying to pull some rapalas with this water but as usual no time. Great to see you're having some action. Would love to hook up with tuna and yourself this summer. I'm in dying need for a slow down and something tells me end of June is my time. Small mouth opener is on my birthday weekend... also looking to hit some droppies before they're gone. I also have a trip planned out on oneida the weekend after walleye opener...

    DB2,

Might be worth trying up on Fish Creek, or impassable barriers on some of the other Oneida tribs on Saturday as well as out on the lake around the stream  mouths.  The spawn is late this year.

Spawn has been done for two weeks or longer, got some buds that live along fish creek or have access and they have told me they are all gone from there. I was very surprised as I thought it was gonna be late also.

Thanks, 3Fan, that is surprising considering how late everything else is. Maybe just as well, if the streams up there are blowing out like around here after the inch plus over the last 24 hours, it would be rough fishing.

Well, good luck to all on the big lake then.

Was planning on fishing the edge of the dirty water in the tournament but still no call that my boat is in the water. Kinda cheeses me a bit but more than anything I want to get it to the big pond before the browns are done.
