Spring Fishing

Hello All
Considering a spring steel head trip. Never fished them at this time of year. Looking for some spring tips. Tactics, lures/baits, presentations, What parts of the creek, upper, middle, lower. The usual kind of stuff. Thanks in advance for all your help.

The usual eggs and minnows tight to the bottom in the pools (spawning activity of them and suckers is occurring, and they'll hit bait fish anytime), and if you fly fish, black stone flies and pheasant tail nymphs are absolutely dynamite at this time of year, flip a rock or look near the remaining ice flows or snow banks in the water, you may very well see tons of them.

All three of the areas you mentioned may hold fish, fresh fish, along with the "jack" runs, can be found in lower stretches, holdovers above. Can't really comment for this year specifically, haven't fished Erie since December, have heard from some that the ice jams at the mouth are keeping fish from getting in, but here's a video of some guys catching them yesterday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzvWT_wUr7w&feature=youtu.be&a

trout man, consider some brighter color flies, I've had success with pink and purple in the past. Spawn bags are also a good bet.
Take care dude and good luck.

If you have fished the creeks before its more or less the same IMO.
This year we have lots of water hitting the conditions right can be a challenge.
Also the smolts get stocked soon followed by the sucker run they both can be very annoying to catch you just need to be flexible and move around til you find the steel.
Overall they are big trout in a stream do not over think it!

I fish the same in spring as the fall, maybe a little more bait in spring. But the usual methods will catch fish. I like wax worms if Im bait fishing.

I personally like sight fishing a little more in the spring than in the fall, so that I can keep my hook out of the smolts.  There can be black swarms of them in some holes and nearly impossible to keep off the hook when you run into them that thick.  My advice if you run into lots of smolts is move on and just keep searching for areas where there are more big fish holding with less smolts.

Oh, don't forget the polarized sunglasses, those are a huge help in sight fishing.

FYI the smolts are in on upper Elk and they are hungry lil buggers.
Lots of cold water out there tough day but enjoyed it anyways.
If your going out anytime soon make sure your fishing deep fish are very cold and lazy right now.

Can you fish all the creeks still? Thinking about taking a trip up this weekend to close out steelhead season till Fall time. Dont want to pull a woodcock dam again lol and see its all closed to fishing till trout opener...

Yes, you can still fish the tribs till April 10th.

From the regs: It is unlawful to fish or possess trout or salmon in or along any Lake Erie tributary stream from 12:01 a.m. on April 11 until 8 a.m. on April 12 (32 hours total).

I think for the sake of keeping the steelhead population healthy All fishing in the tribs  should stop when the smolts are put in. This would save a lot of smolts from mistreatment. The fishing could resume the 1st day of the regular trout season. Give em a break.

I just finished a 3 day trip (would have been 4 days if not for the highs today being in the high teens) and had really good luck on several different tribs using minnows, single eggs, and nymphs. However, with the cold mornings, you have to break ice. I wouldn't want to be up there after this weekend because there is A LOT of ice on the cliffs that is going to melt and cause a real mess next week when the warmer temps come. Good luck if you head out.

Fished for three hours lower elk on 3/27. One of my fav stretches produced nothing for two hours. Moved about fifty yards and hooked 5 landed 3 in an hour. Too bad I had to leave. And as I pulled the big one outta the water for a pic, it got away (imagine that). Other guys there were catching em on minnows and jigging wax worms. I got my three jigging small soft plastics. I wish I coulda stayed longer! Water was perfect.
Sprung a leak in my waders but llbean will replace them free so that's good.
If u can get to the creeks, now is the time to go!

Fished Saturday, most of the streams were little up and dirty yet, sounds like Thursday was the day to be up. Caught one fresh fish on 16 mile on a zonker, and had a few other misses.

Rain showers Wed/Thur- rain /thunder Fri.
Still some melting going on this is NWPA.
430 on Walnut gage currently Wed for Elk is questionable IMO but its your time and $.
Maybe smaller creeks Wed.....if not much H2O falls.
Water will be stained no matter what if not just plain muddy.
If you need to see fish to catch em' STAY HOME!
I have heard countless guys holding flea rods complaining about conditions in past few weeks just trying to prevent the misery for sum of u.

Not calling for rain till late Wednesday into Thursday , shouldn't be all that bad Wednesday if we don't get any precipitation till then , creeks should drop tomorrow night into Wednesday but it won't take much to bring them back up

Fished upper and middle elk today, upper being more productive. Water was up and green but not muddy. Fish came on egg patterns. However, smolts everywhere! Didn't realize they had stocked them already.

i had a few hours yesterday after work, but the rain was against me.  Had like 30 minutes of fishable water, then 1.5 hrs of futility.  :(
