Totally New At This

So I'm hoping I can get some help here!  I'm from the Pittsburgh area and I normally fish the rivers and lakes around here.  Catfish are my specialty, with bass in second.  I've not been fishing seriously for very long and I am far from what I'd consider a great fisherman.  I think I just get lucky.  LOL!

Anyway, a buddy wants to take me up to Erie tomorrow night through Thursday.  I have only heard stories about this place it seems everyone finds magical!  I've never even been there!  So, needless to say, I am going to be completely out of my element!

All I know at this point is we'll be fishing for steelhead off the wall at night and then in the creek in the morning.  My buddy has a light rod for me to use, as all of mine are too heavy.  Waders too, since I do not own a pair!  He's gone there for years so he knows the ropes.

Basically, I want to have an idea of what to expect before I get there and end up being shell-shocked!  What advice would you give a newbie fisherman?  Any must-haves that I need to go out and buy in addition to upgrading my license for Erie?  Can anyone give me a simple description of a typical day up there so I have a rough idea what to expect?

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me.  Just interested in learning what I can before I throw myself to the fish!  Can't wait to go!  Thanks!

Fish them just like trout, don't horse them in and set the drag so they can run alittle. Most fish you catch will be about 23 to 27 inches and about 3 to 8 pounds. --- You are in for a treat... Good Luck and Let us know how it goes. Pics are always a plus.

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

"She" actually!  :)  And yes, my buddy said we'll be fishing off the wall at night, whatever that means!  LOL!  I'm actually getting ready to go meet him up at Gander Mountain.  Any supplies a catfisher wouldn't have that I need to pick up?

BTW, love me some Steelers fans!  LOL!

I'm so excited!  I wish we could go tonight!  We were supposed to but he said it's raining up there now and the creeks won't clear up for 24 hours.  :(  Oh well at least I get a trip to Gander Mountain on this horribly dreary day!  Maybe I'll fish for some cats tonight while I wait!

On your way to Erie stop at the Walmart in Edinboro and buy sweatshirts, hats and coats with the local high school's name on them or at least wear camo.
Remove all yellow and black clothes in parking lot then put new stuff on-Their parking lot, not in Eriez.
Also cover any Steeler or Penguins bumper stickers with Slippery Rock University decals.
PGH Pirate logos are OK-nobody in Tha Burgh cares about them!
NEVER SAY YINZ ETC. while up there- mup-ere

The locals up there seem friendly enough but if some of the internet tough guys are allowed out of mommies basement look out if they drink.

LMAO!!!!!  A fisherman with a sense of humor!  We'll have to be fishing buddies one day!  :)

Just for that I'm going to wear every piece of Steeler gear I can find!  :D

I don't need to stop there anymore.
I have plenty of camo, no bumper or Allegheny Co emissions stickers.
The key to my disguise is a blue knit cap my mother gave me years ago with a Buffalo Bills logo
I keep it in my safe so that I don't need to explain owing it while living down here.

PS: No Iron City Beer-drink something Canadian if needed.

Pafisher is right, fish for them just like trout.  Your friend sounds like he knows what he's doing and he's taking you to fish in what should be perfect water conditions.  Have a blast and let us know how you do?
