Topwater, scum frog through the pads.

Back when beagle jr. 7 or 8, I had him in the jon boat with me working scum frogs in the pads on Long Pond near Oxford, NY. He liked the "plop plop" sound the frog mad as it hit the pads so he just started wackin the frog on the pads right next to the boat. This HUGE bass exploded out of the pads and nailed the frog. He was too surprised to set the hook. I could not get him to fish more than 2 feet from the boat for years.

Topwater for smallmouth in a river is a blast. All of my most memeorable smallmouth from the Conewango came on top. Where I used to fish it there had been some kind of chemical plant years and years ago, and there was a concrete or ceramic pipe segment in the water, facing up and down stream. It sat in water probably thigh deep, and the top of the pipe was sticking out of the water. A nice fish must've been hiding out in that piece of pipe because I caught a gorgeous smallmouth from there one day, it hit the popper when it was just a few inches from the opening. I was either 14 or 15 that summer.

Topwater, no doubt. The topwater is the only bait I can miss a huge bite on and still think to myself "that was awesome!"

Topwater Bass or subsurface? Which do you like, and why?

I like any bass bite, LOL!

Personally, I really like flipping weeds or wood. There is just something about using a 7'6" rod, 65 lb braided line, and the subtle tick or solid thump you get when you flip or pitch to a target, then being able to wheel back and cross their eyes. The wild fight in the weeds or pads is cool too.

    So, subsurface for me!
