might be.  i've taken the trip up in early september before though, and it usually leaves a lot to be desired.

Truth!  My sources tell me that there has been so little rain that some of the creeks, 20 mile for instance, are barely making it to the lake this year and when they do it's very shallow.    Sometimes the water soaks thru the gravel before it even makes a channel to the lake.  We need a WEEK or more of good heavy rain to blow out the gravel bars at the mouths of most of the creeks to allow fish to come in.  1 or two days of rain just ain't going to cut it.  You're better off planning to fish the mouths of Elk and the 'Nut'. right now unless you like to explore.   Wave action can close a creek up in about two days without adequate flow to keep the mouth open.  That's why they dredge Walnut.

you may be a tad early for any huge numbers, but i'm not going to use any "defensive strategies" and tell you not to go and try it

For any and all "newbies" reading this thread, there are ALWAYS fish in the lower tribs by late sept, every friggin year, in and out. If someone posts and says the mouth is closed, no fish, etc. it's a defensive strategy on their part.

I agree with Indisguiz. The east side has very very low flow these times of year. I have been up there before and there is 4" of water in the streams. There are no minnows or anything. If you have seen a few other of my posts that say that October is better than Sept, it is b/c I fish the east side and the streams have not opened up untill Oct 16th in two of the last 3 years. Last year some fish made it up the last week of september, but that was the earliest anythign could get in. THe mouths of the streams will be completely drifted shut with stones.

Your best bet right now, by far, is the west side.

+1  Looked at it the day after the rain. Some water NO fish. Just wait , It will come in time. High wind and Waves this past day or 2 have closed up the mouths again.

Pittsteel: While some decent steelhead fishing can be found in Sept and early Oct, the reality is that generally speaking steelhead fishing starts in mid to late oct and runs into the spring. Relax, do some more smallie fishing, hit up the fall stocked streams in early oct, and head up to erie once we've had some long dreary rains and periods of cool temps (not one or two days of 40 degrees at night). The lake is still warm, and the streams are low. I've gotten myself all excited to go steelhead fishing and convinced myself that a little rain and some cool weather would do wonders just to drive north and find that I was a month early. When I started steelhead fishing the consensus was that steelheading started in NOVEMBER. If you read this site you'd think that early runs started in July.

Surprised by the responses.  Usually not so polite to that type of question.  It is a little early though.

Once you get into the colder months the east side will hopefully have good numbers of fish.  We ran into some nice fish last year.  Got lucky and had a day where we watched fresh chromers running upstream and had some of them be very aggressive with our flies.  Had a guy across from me who's never done it before getting hook up after hook up.  Needless to say, this guy is now hooked for life.

pretty much as everyone said u really are waste ur time fishing the esat side untill a very big rain.   all the streams are pretty much locked up  at the lake and need blown open this time of year. wait it rains like crazy.

10% Of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish..... IT AIN'T LUCK

If no fish, you can take the wife across at Niagara and go to Bingo! I just love it when they start pulling each others blue hair and the dentures start flying...dont mess with an ol lady and her bingo dauber - you might just wind up looking like some escapee from a measles ward
