Wilmington, NC Late August. Any opportunities?

An old girlfriend just asked me to join her (and a few others) for a free 5 day/4 night extended weekend at a beach condo near Wilmington, NC. Anyone familiar with the area know of any fly fishing opportunities (from shore) at that time of year? I'd also consider dark-siding, but I'd really prefer not to.

If the few others are all women I'd encourage you to forget about the fishing.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

    Thanks, DT!

She's from Wilmington (and here...and LA...) and her older sister works at a local martini bar, so she knows some spots, but new waterholes are always a plus.

SK...so far its about a 50-50 split. She's a beach bum, though, so I'll have all the time in the world to fish thru the day.

Oh that sounds really cool! While I don't know if she (or anyone else) will be up for camping...night fishing might be productive. I've been ocean fishing several times, and never caught a single fish. Lots of blue crabs, plenty of motion sickness & sunburn...and one very large, very unhappy snapping turtle...but never a single fish.

been to caroilna beach a few times capefear river is in that area also snows cut where you can drive on the beach. i know that the two peirs are good fishing, one in carolina beach and the other is kerr beach with in 10 miles or so of each other. not sure if ur looking to fish with a charter but the shark fishing behing the shrimp boats is fun. http://reel-adventure.com/index.htm

10% Of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish..... IT AIN'T LUCK

Flyfish yes, boat/guide, no. I could do the guide thing, but I kind of want to do it myself. I've gotten a lot of good info from guys here, a few friends of friends, and a few Wilmington locals on another site. While I'm not going to jinx myself with any prediction of success, I think I've done just about all I can on my part to learn about the area, the fish, and the tactics. Hopefully that will be enough to eventually get into a fish, even a small one.

I've tried ocean fishing several times, surf, inshore and offshore, and never even once caught anything. I wish I could blame it on bad conditions, but while surf fishing, there were plenty of times when the 3-4 fishing buddies with me each caught a half dozen or so and I got skunked.

Me + Ocean + boat = sunburn, seasickness, skunk. All three times that it's happened. Pretty much turned me off from fishing in any boat or water much larger than a small lake or slow river in a canoe.

Reds, mostly. Spanish if I get in the surf. Possibly some specks around too, if I happen into them. Haven't said much about blues, but I'll be taking down some knottable steel tippet just in case.

Been there, sharpe. Thanks for the link.

KJH, thanks for that. I'd found one other shop online that I was planning to hit up, but I'll check both out now. :)

In your experience...more important to hit the time of day right, or the tide? If time, when? If tide, when? From what I've been hearing, consensus seems to be ignore the time of day, hit the incoming and high tide, which puts me on the flats mid-afternoon. Having read your posts on fishing I'm more familiar with, you seem to have some opinions about things that are unconventional...but sometimes brutally sensible.

I've not done it, but from what I understand those Carolina flats are all about the tides.  100% tides.

Thanks, D-Nymph, that seems to jive with what I've read. It's gonna seem weird heading out to fish at midday in August, but if that's what seems to work, that's what I'll do.

Kind of hard to fish a flat if there is no water on it, yes?

Fish the channel, then as the flat fills up, fish it, is what people seem to be doing.

pop in here... http://www.hooklineandpaddle.com/ and ask for Ryan or Chris. They will rent you a sweet fly fishin kayak and put you on the right flats at the right tides.  They are just up from the beach. Great guys and Ryan is a former Western PA boy.
