 I really don't have a #1 go to pattern. Like Swinger said, too many variables.
I prefer to fish streamers but that's not always the ticket.
I get bored with dead drifting yarn and nymphs but sometimes they are the ticket.
I do find myself fishing woolly bugger variations quite a bit.

Lately, I have had good luck with olive pheasant tails #14's.  I am experimenting with woolly worms, a variant of a woolly bugger.  Instead of the marabou tail, you have a yarn tail made out of glo bug yarn.  I had a couple of these flies inhaled by steelies.
