Fishing with my 10 year old

Hello,
I have a 10-year-old son who enjoys fishing. I want to take him on a fishing trip to Erie for Steelhead. What suggestions do you have to make this a fun time together? Would it be better to try the lake or streams?  Would staying over night (around the Walnut creek area) make it better? Thank you for your suggestions.

Go to the streams near the lake.  I'd give Elk a try.   There'll be a lot of people but lots of fish around the mouths.  More time you spend there, your odds will increase.

    Recman,

I was just to Walnut yesterday evening and there was a fellow there with his son and the young boy landed 5 steelies.  He had a smile on his face from ear to ear.  There are some steelies in the holes and I would recommend if possible to come during the week when the crowds are smaller and you can have some room to enjoy the fish.  Do you have waders?  If so, you can do a little walking up stream to see what is going up there.  If not, you can fish the wall.

Trout run is another pretty good spot to cast spoons.  That might be a good choice as well as the mouth of Elk creek.

The creeks are quite low now and with very little if any rain on the horizon, they fishing is going to be slow, but if you are patient and work at it, you will be able to land a steelie or two.

    Good luck.

we took our boys to the Legion hole, mine are older at 17 and 20, but it's not usually as crowded (when we've been there anyways)
and the new parking area is nice too. It's probably a little too early for many fish to be that far upstream just yet.
there was a guy fishing with a young boy on Elk near the sportmans club, off of Elk Creek Rd on sunday. it seemed like a nice place to take kids.

There are no steelhead at the legion hole. Need colder weather and lots of rain. I have seen a few fish up to the rail road trestle as of now.

The best suggestion for making it a good time for him is for you to be prepared to do more helping and teaching than fishing until he has advanced enough to handle it on his own.  The time you spend not fishing now will pay huge dividends later.

In addition to the above stay overnight and take your son to the indoor waterpark Splash Lagoon.  Take suites for both of you and have a blast then head down to Quaker steak and lube for some wings.
