The white perch
Could someone post a photograph of a "white perch"? I have never encountered one of these. I remember years ago I visited Ontario and a gentleman told me that they fish for white perch, but that they were another name for a walleye. So, since they are not Walleye, I would like to see what one looks like with my own eyes. Unless of course, it is as elusive as the infamous blue pike....

http://www.seagrant.wisc.edu/greatlakesfish/whiteperch.html http://www.seagrant.umn.edu/exotics/wperch.html White bass, silver bass, white perch, silver perch. Whatever. They are different fish, and are decent enough to eat. Back in the days when my Dad was throwing and trolling spoons for blue pike , he'd never throw one of those little guys back. Meat was meat, and if you brought an edible fish into the boat, it went into the fry-pan. He would've kicked my****if he'd have seen me on the boats this summer trolling for 'eyes, and tossing white bass back. That's why I had to keep 2 we pulled in that were 3 times the size of any I'd ever caught before. The fillets ended up being bigger than my hand, and just as thick. Drippin'. I guess with more guys trolling exclusively for walleyes and fewer people harvesting the white bass, they get to grow larger. It's been years since I've caught a silver perch (what the Old Man called white perch), but I'm sure they're still out there. I hope this helps. Oh, here's one more for you: http://www.seagrant.wisc.edu/greatlakesfish/bluepike.html

Thanks for the picture rinkerstix. That dont look like no perch. In fact, it looks like a large shiner almost. T.T. That is a fascinating bit of info. I hope they make a public announcement if they do indeed find a live blue pike in the great lakes one day. Thanks again all.

Definately a White Perch. Finster, the mouth IS one of the distinguishing features. The lower jaw extends beyond the upper on a White Bass. Another, the eyes on a White Bass are yellow.

I've tried eating them, didn't care for them at all. Not to be confused with white bass, which are pretty good at the table.
