Did you know the lifespan of a trailer tire ???

I have a 2000 Tandem trailer that has tires that look brand new still have the nipples on them and no signs of dryrot, cracks or anything out of the ordinary. But I blew 2 in 3 days. The tread peeled right off the steel belts. The tire pressure was at max cold and everything seemed fine. After I blew the first tire in the outer banks athe tire guy there told me I probably hit something on the road and damaged the tire without knowing so. On my way home we blew the second tire tread seperated from the belts same as the first tire this happened in Maryland. I was close to an exit so I checked my Garmin street pilot to see what was off the exit and luckily there was a Sears, Wal mart, Home Depot, Lowes, 3 tire companies, Sams club, Costco Carquest, Napa, an Rv store and a few other places that may sell tires after driving to the first tire store and checking with every other store there for 1 205-75-14 trailer tire and not locating 1. I had to beg the  one tire store to install a car tire on the trailer to get me home it took alot of begging to get them to do it because a car tire is not rated for a trailer. So I did finally get home.

MY POINT: Two of the tire companies said that all trailer tires should be changed every 5 years due to the fact they sit in one spot so long and the rubber delaminates from the belts. When they seen the tire that blew they said thats what happened.

Just passing on what I consider very useful information

I just put new tires on my trailer this year. the old ones were on for 26 years. I put the trailer on jack stands for the off season. I do not think they were really that bad but I swapped them out of concern of their age.

Imagine that I do have CARLISLE tires on the trailer I will look for a different brand in the spring and just put 4 new ones on. Marty I was told that the way a trailer bounces is not good on car, suv, or truck tires so I think I'll stick with a trailer line. I tow my boats alot New York, Port Clinton, OBX, Florida, Erie, Canada, so I surely want the best tire money can buy. The one thing I was very thankful on when the tires blew is that I had a tandem trailer that was real nice being able to get off the road and change the tire in a safe location. I'm don't even like switching drivers on the side of the highway after seeing all the police video's of people hitting the police cars and police officers with there lights on.

Well I'll be in Erie over the weekend I'll give you a call on the radio CB. Lat'r

If you go over to walleyecentral_dot_com and do a search for Carlisle trailer tires, you can get a real feel for all the "love" going around for them (not!).  I have never seen one positive post about them.  A lot of those guys use Goodyear Marathons I believe.

I don't recall ever owning Carlisle trailer tires, but I have heard alot of bad things said about them on the several boating websites I visit. I bought a new 5800 lb capacity tandem axle EZ Loader in 2004. It came with Goodyear radial trailer tires. So far, I like the tires. Granted, I only tow about 400 miles a year on them.

I have had way to many blow outs using Carlisles.  When I was at Port Clinton a couple months ago I found that the Wal Mart carries a very large supply of upper end trailer tires.  They can get the Goodyear Marathons for you.  I did purchase the last 2 15"  Goodyear trailer tires they had in stock at the time.  I think I paid $115/each for them.  Which by the way is a good price for them I feel.  Coopers area also good, but they may cost a few dollars more.

The Carlisles were the replacment to the Electra's many years ago.  Same tire thread, rating everything.  Thats another thing, check the tire ratings, I believe the one's I got were in a load range 'D'.  Good luck, a few extra dollars is difinitly worth it in safety and they will last longer.

5 years!  Wow thats a long time in my opinion.  I've never left a set of tires on my trailer for 5 years, even if there was little use which is rare for me.  As a rule, I like to change my trailer tires every other year regardless of what they look like because I've had them come apart on the road when they looked good.  I agree Carlisle suck, but even with Carlisle, if you change every other year, you'll be fine.  Its worth the $100 every other year for 2 tires (approx.).  Especially if you've been through a flat in the middle of Nowhere!

PS-ALWAYS HAVE A SPARE!!! And if you use Carlisles, Have two!!

I had a year old Carlisle bubble out on the side wall a few weeks ago.  The tread hardly looks worn.  I guess I was lucky that it didn't blow out on the way up to the lake.

5 years old and all 4 are carlisie. Never had a spec of an issue with them.  I think you either get really good tires...or really bad tires from them...lol

I am probaly going to put loadstars on next year and see how they treat me.

Toad, had the same happen to me a couple days ago, (not the first time either)just got back from the dealer that sold them to me and he filled out paperwork to Carlilse, took a tread measurement for pro-rating and charged me $12 for a new one, mounted. Worked for me, but I'm shoppin for a better tire next year
