Erie boat

What size range of  boat is preferable on Erie??  Will a 17ft Targa handle it?? I fish the ocean on our Grady 232 so greenhorn I am not!. This Erie thing is new to me. Erie is a heck of a lot shallower than the canyons. Any input would help

Aluminum is a little light for my preferance but it should be ok up to 3'
I used my 20' Glastron in 2-4's with no problem. It is fairly wide and heavy with a 350 alpha drive.
Remember it is not just the size of the wave it is the frequency.

The first trench is 7 miles from Walnut or the Mountain is 3 miles from North East Marina.

Have a marine radio with weather band and flares are mandatory on the big pond.

Yes, if you go NNW at that heading it is 17Mi

I don't know how new that map is and things change  a little with every storm.

Pghmarty is right. Lake Erie is a completly different animal. The wave frequency is what really screws you up. Anything over 4 foot and most people I know will stay off until it calms down because it will beat the hell out of you. A radio, flares and a motor that can get you off the lake fast is a must. A cell phone with internet access is a very nice thing to have so you can see the radar and what is coming. If you could find someone to take you out a couple times in different weather that knows the lake would be great as you would be able to see how the lake is

The worst/best ride I ever had was in Kinzua 2 years ago with my dad in my 20' Glastron.
Were were back in Sugar Run fishing and saw black clouds to the north west.
Why I chose to obey the 8MPH limit that day is unexplainable.
When we got close to the lake there was 2-3 foot chop coming from every direction followed by 4 foot waves and the weather was getting worse.
Dad wanted me to hurry back to the dock at Willow Bay north west of us.
Low speed does not work in those conditions so I chose to run the boat about as fast as I could see ahead.
20-30 MPH seemed to bounce across the waves pretty good.
Kept on track with the GPS, visibility was under 300 foot in the afternoon and we were almost the only ones out that day.
When we got to the dock the storm quit just as fast as it started.
It looked like the rest of the day was going to be beutiful but we were tired, sore, wet and headed home fishless.

Wish I had my Checkmate that day!
Love pounding the waves in that nightmare!!!

I like bigger boats 24+ but a nice 19foot aluminum welded Crestliner Sabre makes a real nice Erie boat that doesn 't weigh as much as a fiberglass boat but it handles the water great. We fished with one of those for 7 years with no problems. I really like a hardtop for fishing also. I would have to agree 4 footers are very rough to fish and run unless you get a heavier glass boat makes for a much nicer ride and a bit faster in rough water also.

4 footers make it reel easy to drop a rod and almost imposible to tie a knot.

Your Grady 232 should be excellent for Erie.

I prefer closed bow and over 20 ft.

I run a Grady 226 on Erie myself.

If you have that Grady here that's the boat I'd be fishing from. By your post I somehoe took it the Grady was elsewhere. That would be an awesome boat for Erie.

We were out of Sandusky Ohio a few years ago ,  and you couldn't see land in any direction  and here comes this guy all by himself in a little flat bottom john boat. You should have hear all the chatter on the radio's about that . He couldn't have had much more than 15-20 hp motor on the **** thing . But there he was trolling with the big boys. Either nuts or drunk.

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

Sounds like one of my buddies down in Texas.  In the summer, he takes his 16' Carolina Skiff with a jacked-up 40 hp Yammy 20-25 miles offshore, by himself, in search of kingfish.  He invited me to go several times but I conveniently had something else to do each time.  We did have some great flounder, redfish and speck fishing times on the beachfront, jetties and bays though.  Give me something at least 20', deep v, and preferably a hard top and I am good to go though!

Don't think I would turn down a ride on a 25' plus World Cat or Glacier Bay cat hull though.  For Erie's chop, those boats would be great but you don't see that many around up here.  3'-5' and 4'-6' wouldn't be much of a problem in one of those.

unfortunately the Grady is a rigged for tuna  boat in Ocean City. Not trailerable.  I know it would be a excellent Erie boat though.

Probably 3 flares that are not outdated and USCG approved.
They are needed on the Great Lakes

I fish Erie with a Bass Tracker Pro Guide 17 with a 70 hp motor. I have to pick my days carefully and pay attention to the weather. I dont go out in anything over 2 ft. If it gets worse than that when I am out I go back in. I have gone out as far as 8 miles. Use some common since and you should be alright.
