Theft
Just wanted to put everyone on the lookout, my buddie just got back from Erie, and he made it out about 4 miles, and his motor quit, -----someone had siphoned almost all of his gas out of his boat at the hotel in the middle of the night. The authorities said this has been happening a lot lately. Be on the lookout!!!!!

If they would ever catch the SOB that pulls that kind of crap, they should take them out to the first trench and drop 'em off.

Right when I though gas prices were falling. Is there a such thing as a locking gas cap for boats, other than a gun?

That sucks! I would love to come out and find someone screwing with my boat or equipment! I'm thinking their in deep Sheet! It takes a real set of monkey balls to do something like that. It's probably not another fishermen doing it though. I got a good idea if you have a freshwater holding tank put a gas sticker under the water fill and a water sticker under the fuel fill them Bass Turds won't make it far when they fill their tanks then!! Even if you don't have a freshwater tank put a water sticker under or above your fuel fill and that will probably divert the stupid idiots!!!!!

probably people that work at the hotel/hotels. erie boats hold a lot of fuel. i know if i stay overnight i fuel up before going to the hotel so i dont have to stop in the morning. they either have big vehicles theyre siphoning into, gas cans, more than one vehicle, or they are just taking what they need and people who dont have as much fuel in their boat are noticing it more. either way it would be horrible running out into the lake and running out of fuel.

Don't know that much about boats... but do they make a locking gas cap of some sort like the ones you can get for cars ? If not, might be something to think about inventing.....its only gonna get worse

Gentlemen, I have a better idea, although on a different track. How about putting a "decoy boat" out with a full tank of about 50% gas, 20% alcohol and 30% nitromethene! Yep, it would be expensive! But you couild easily find out who the culprits were. They could get about 1/4 mile and their engine would blow the rods out the bottom end of the block. Very fitting I would say. Steal 50 dollars worth of gas, have to replace a 1000(+) dollar motor. I had to edit this before I posted something else. But many years ago we had the same problem on the worksite with gas disappearing from the trucks. So we did just that. We had a truck that was being used as a tool truck which just sat on the job site. I mixed up a load of fuel and we filled it up with 35 gallons. Two cars and 1 motorcycle from the neighborhood where we were working suffered catastrophic engine failures. Gee, I wonder why?

LMAO!!!!!!!!!! i'd ask you the same question but i dont want to confuse you again like the last time you got confused with one of my posts. i was joking around with pghmarty. there is another russian thread about taking steelhead illegally in case you missed it. pghmarty made reference to canadians coming over the border to steal gas. put the 2 together and that is where russians and canadians came into play. i personally dont care what race, nationality or whatever people call themselves. i do find it amusing when people blame things on certain nationalities when there are people from all nationalities that do the same thing. get in out of the sun, swig some geritol, take a nap and start the day on the other side of the bed.

I don't think I would use a locking cap. I would worry about them trying to pry it off and damaging the boat. I like the switching water and gas stickers, thats a kick **** Idea! It's not easy for the average moron to get gas out of the fuel system of a modern car.

Yes, what Mountie has reported is sadly true. I am the poor sucker who was siphoned dry in the middle of the night. I lost somewhere around 20 gallons of gas while staying at the Bell Air Clarion. My gas gage was stuck...it read 3/4 full, so I had no idea until it was waayyy too late. We were well on our way out to the perch pack to fill the cooler, when Whammo, suddenly she dies. I will have to tip my hat to my Optima battery though, the troller was a real workhorse on our four hour ride back to Walnut Marina. We got her under two miles when a couple of fine fisherman on there way in graciously offered us a tow. They did ask a ransom though, the one fella said - "Give us your fish first." And I would have, except we had nothing to give, except a few cold drinks, and a full bucket of minnows. Thank you again guys for helping us out. My dad, who rarely gets a day off, was really disappointed that our whole morning was wasted, so we threw out some crankbaits and pulled them along on the way in. Hey what do you know, we caught three walleyes to boot. The best action we had was at night or right at dark trolling for the eyes though. We didnt catch a lot, but we did catch a few in 40 foot of water trolling crankbaits. The few we did catch were nice fish, no dinks. A gentleman at the dock said that he has had his gas stolen twice this year and six other times in the past, while staying at Erie. Be on the lookout, no joke. Its not a good feeling to be four miles out, with nothing but your trolling motor and a paddle. The next time I come up I will be watching a lot closer for sure.

Isn't it pathetic how some smal plple thriv on other plples misfortune. Hope to never run into these small people on the streams. My life is much better without those that ridicule and demean others. Dave
