Bluefin Tuna in NJ

my buddy called me and asked if i wanted to go tuna fishing with him (he didnt ask, cause he knew what my answer was).  my problem is that i have only fished northwest PA. any of you guys ever go out on a charter for bluefin tunas.  what other costs should i expect other than the charter fee and tips.   i have never chartered a boat before, so i have no idea what to expect.   i am really excited and cant wait.

Tuna trips out of NJ are normally a 24 hr event. Your leave in an afternoon and return the following evening. The first part of the trip is a trolling event and then your set up for the night on a anchor and chunk. the main part of the bite seems to take place at 3 am. A better place to go out of is delaware or maryland area. The tuna grounds are closer to shore and the trips last about 12 hrs . You bring your own food and drinks and bring a cooler for the food and later hopefully for fish. The last trip I did was 3 yrs ago and the cost for 6 people on board was $500.00 each + tip. Tip can be from 15-20% of cost.

Extra costs that you might want to consider.

Fish cleaning (per pound), probably want to put aside $100 per person for a good catch.

Bagging - They'll put fish in a bag for you at the cleaner, but will cost extra to have it vaccum packed and flash frozen if you like.

Tipping is pretty much like going to a resteraunt.  The mate is just like a server, he gets paid basically nothing from the captain, and will likely be on the move 95% of the time.  He is dependant on what you guys give him.  Even if you get skunked, if he is serving you guys well, you really need to tip him.  Unlike a waiter, he doesn't have 10 other tables, that can pick up the slack of a bad tipper.

Charter boats are a blast, but are pretty expensive.  Definitely something to check out though.

Make sure there isn't any "understanding" that the captain owns the fish caught either.  I've heard some strange things about bluefin charters.  It doesn't sound right at all to me, that you pay to go out, but they can sell your catch with out your permission.  Read your contract and ask questions.  They can sell a large bluefin tuna for $5k before reaching the dock, and give you $100.  Not sure if it was just a made for TV court thing that I saw, or if that really happens.

Ocean City is a better bet fishing grounds are alot closer just a 2 hr ride to get 50 miles offshore which means cheaper charter. I think it might be alittle late for tuna up here I think it peaks in July.

last trip was 2 years ago on jade 2 out of the indian river.  I would say 100 per person for cleaning is high.  Out of deleware you can catch 2 under like 50 inchs 1 over 54 inches ( well something like that ) that is for blue fin and don't know the yellow fin because we only caught one.  it was a dollar a pound for cleaning/fillet.  Was like 20 per person.  Was a blast though going out next season can't wait.
