Fuel capacity on Thompson 240 hardtop??

If anyone is familiar with a Thompson 240 Fishermen hardtop I need to know the fuel capacity. I'm not sure how accurate the gauge is. It said empty and only took 50 gallons to fill it. I would think it should have more than a 50 gallon tank. Your input would be helpful Thanks

BF, don't trust any standard fuel gauge on any boat. Once you get a chance check out flowscan gauges. Theses are fuel gauges, that you install on your dash and have a sending unit that you install in your fuel line. They are very accurate and once they are calibrated you can get accurate readings to a 10th of a gal.
    A bit of info.

I would look into getting an auxilary gas tank for that boat. 50 gallon is not much for a 24 ft hard top boat.

if you can see the tank........usually tells you the capacity

    50 Gallon not enough?????

Most 240 Thompsons i know of ran a 4.3L Merc V6 190hp.  My boat has a 5.0L V8 with 62 Gallon tank.  Even before owning a kicker motor we trolled 3 days on a tank.......

I ran 3 trips on that tank with no kicker so it's fine for the Great Lakes. I'm taking it to the OBX in 2 weeks and need to know my capacity so I know how far I'll be able to fish off shore. I should be okay 15-18 miles out if needs to be. Thanks for your input

A good rule of thumb is 1/3 is saved for reserve. Burn the others 3rds as out, fishing and return.

Yep, the guys who fish offshore in the salt live by the rule of 1/3s.  My buddy had a 21' Sea Chaser C.C. with a 150 hp Yamaha 2 stroke.  His fuel capacity was 75 gallons in the tank and we would take 5 - 6 gallon cans for re-fueling and fish up to 50 miles offshore.  He also had a Floscan that was very reliable.  Also, keep in mind, on most boats, in rough or rolling seas you should count on approximately 10% if your tank capacity not being "useable" into your rule of thirds calculations due to the fuel pick-up location.
