Help with crawler riggs

Going fishing in the morning. I'm going to try south of the first trench north of walnut. That seems to be the place that everyone is getting eyes. I don't have planer boards so I was going to run dowriggers with crawler harnesses. Any suggestions? Depth, distance from ball, speed, even a location? Should I be a few miles South of the trench or right on the frindge? Is there a good depth of water there holding up at? Any help would be great. I've been skunked on eyes my last two trips.

    Katty,

Lead length really is dependent on species, depth, water clarity. For Eyes I prefer at least 40-50 feet back, longer in shallow water or if fishing higher in the water column, or clear water. For Steelies, and kings. 25 feet is plenty in all but the shallowest of water.

Gasp!  Spoon, you actually soil your hands with, ick, worms?!?!?!?!  I wonder what the spoon manufacturers association will think about that.  You obviously put a few salesmen and ceo's children through college with the collection you've got on board.

Right on 'chucker.  20 feet is about as far back as I go on riggers though.  Much longer than that and you can end up "trolling" 18 to 22" walleyes.  I also prefer spoons on riggers.  Spoons will catch eyes and steelies.  One of my favorite King sets is my deepest rigger with a clean spoon a mere 5 to 8 feet behind the ball.  Leave it further back and you will cut your hits in half.

    Tim,

I'll run crawlers, but not if I can avoid it ( Skein is another story ). Lead length really remains the same running spoons, or harnesses. As for my collection, it ain't nothin. H@ll I can fit them all in one box.

Well, I'd hate to be a guest in a hotel you'd run, what with the way you have those spoons stacked in there.  I ain't sharing a room with some other poor sap just so you can "fit them all in one box".

So, when we hittin' 'em 'gain?  I had an itch to buy a few chicken wings of my own, 'til I saw the price stickers G.M. had on them.  You don't pay retail for those, do you?  Wow!  w_w ties his own harnesses to save $ and ensure quality.  I wonder how much it would cost to start cutting and painting your own spoons?

CB.... Thanks for the info it helped. I got 3 eyes in the boat, missed two and caught one monster steelie. All around 50 ft running riggers at 45. How big are the spoons everyone is talking about? The spoons I have are about 1 &1/2 - 2 inch long I guess around an ounce? Reckon that would do? Mostly silver and blue is what I have. Are you just running empty spoons or tossing a crawler on the end?

    Finster,

The most commonly used spoon is the standard Michigan Stinger, which is 3 3/4 inches. A one ounch spoon is way heavy, and would require high speed to get the proper action. Trolling spoons are much lighter than casting spoons. Blue, and silver are typically Steelhead color, but will catch the occasional Eye. There are a multitude of color combinations out there that work on any given day. Chicken wing, watermellon, and bumble bee are a few favorites. Many prefer spoons with a copper back. Visit MS's website to view a color chart.

Michigan Stingers Standard size, Northern King (NK) 28, these are 3 3/4 inches long. Watermelon, Kevorkian, Monkey Puke, Blueberry Muffin, Natural Born Killer (NBK), and Confusion. Here are some of the colors I run. Just let the fish tell you what color they want. I run mine with a bare hook.

To go along with those Michigan Stingers, get yourself some maroon and black with glow ladder back and dark green and black with glow ladderback pro king spoons.  Have always done well on steelies and eyes with those two spoons.  Get the 3"+ size.  The work great on the riggers or behind the dipsies.
