ontario question

We are headed up to Wilson harbor for salmon fishing this week. Has anyone been up there recently and what depth are they catching them ?

Went out of Oak Orchard creek (point breeze) again on Tuesday with Spoon and creel. It was tougher fishing this time.  We caught 3 decent kings and quite a few steelhead. Tons of water fleas that I think slowed our dipsy bite down, after 5 minutes there were so many fleas on the line I think it may have been affecting our depth.   Most of our fish came around 230 feet of water.  It sounds like they are still catching them scattered all over from 70 feet to way deep.

We're headed to Olcott Sunday am.  Have heard mixed reviews, depending upon wind and moving good temp H2O.  They have been smacking browns and pre-staging Kings in tight (30 to 90 fow) and also lots of action on teenage to mature Kings all the way out to 500.

head east to the power plant, then head NE out to 350 ft. we just got back and managed limits of kings everyday. all flies, mellow yellow. spoons caught very few.

Just got back Stream Pike.  Fishing is S-L-O-W, missed the big bite of 2 to 3 weeks ago.  Fished shallow, fished mid depth, Fished WAY out against the Canadian line.  In a day and a half caught 6 shakers and 3 big steelies, 2 over 30".  Also missed every one of the 6 major hits we had.  1 snapped off a Mag dipsy on wire diver????  Drag set loose and had snubber as well, it just hit it SO hard it snapped at the shock.  It waved bye bye by jumping behind the boat 6 times trying to dislodge the Spin Doctor, fly, 6' leader and MAG dipsy hanging out of his maw.  It was a good fish, probably mid 20s.  Missed another big hit on a high diver, missed 2 good rips, but no hook ups on wire diver - flasher/fly set ups.  Also missed a good one taking drag on clean spoon on deep rigger before it came unbuttoned.  Lots of bad luck!  Fleas were AWFUL off of Olcott but not near as bad off the Bar.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I'm planning my first trip to Ontario and was wondering if my Erie gear would be adequate.  I use Daiwa Sealine 27s with fairly light downrigger rods with 20lb fireline.  My leadcore outfits don't hold much in the way of backing. Only have one heavier rod but will be willing to upgrade if necessary.

I used to love but fear the way they hit cut-bait rigs.  We've had them actually hit dipsies, break 30 lb mono on the strike and 30 lb fireline above the dipsie just like you said Storm.  Sucks losing $30 worth of gear in one strike but god does it get the blood going.  We've had them hit so hard before that we couldn't get the rod out of the holder...love them KINGS!

Be prepared with LOTS of line.  It is not uncommon to see runs of 3 to 400' off the reel after they hook up.  Kings are mean!

We had one take off 800 - 1,000 feet of line on it's first run and multiple runs of 400'...fought it for 45 min and never saw it once.  Hook straightened on the mag spoon...couldn't have happened at a worse time during the LOC.

We're back, pretty slow. managed 3 adult kings and 14 steelheads in 2 days fishing. We actually did better than most guys which is surprizing. anyway flys and spin doctors took most fish, all the kings came on dipseys wth doctors. steelies were hitting spoons. Our biggest king was 24pounds and biggest steelie went 17 which is huge in my book. If I would have caught that steelie from shore, I would mount it.
