white bass are good. i thought i was the only one that eats them. i acually prefer them over yellow perch and even walleye. not to say i dont eat walleye but white bass are very mild flavored and flaky white flesh.

just because a fish is concidered a trash fish doesnt mean it is. orange rouffey was a trash fish thrown away. now its a sought after delicacy. its just a name.

by the way, a white bass tastes just like a hybrid striped bass and if you ever tried one of those than you know how good they are.

Hey Leroy, come down to shenango lake and fish with me. I'll put you on some killer white bass. Thousands busting baitfish on the surface. They hit anything you throw at them. Pick a day and let me know.

I was once told that those fish are actually referred to as white perch. I don't know if that was correct or not, but the person that told me that was working for the state of Ohio taking a survey about fish being caught.

Good to hear that they are actually tasty eating. I honestly never considered eating one before now.

I had eaten the white bass caught from Pymatuming while trolling for eyes there. I'm not sure they're exactly the same fish as the ones we catch at Erie. The ones from Pymatuming seem to be larger and whiter. The ones on Erie seem smaller and have a gold / bronze tint to them.

I didn't think the ones I caught at Pymatuming tasted nearly as good as Walleye. But that's just my opinion. Maybe I'll keep a few the next time I catch some and give them a try. Thanks for the tip.

White perch is a cousin of the white bass.  Same thing with the stripped bass.  So, biologically speaking, a white perch is more of a bass, than a small mouth or large mouth bass.  White perch are great eating, and so are stripped bass.  I'd only imagine that white bass are similar.  Hybrids are good eating too, but like catching them too much to keep them.  I have no problem frying up a gut hooked fish though!!!

Porktown has it right above.  White bass and white perch are two different fish, that are in the same family, temperate bass.  Both are in lake erie.  Not sure if there are white perch in pymatuming or not, I know there are white bass there though.

I have a buddy that just moved back up here from Maryland.  He was always telling me about the perch fishing on the Chesapeake.  It wasn’t until he got up here and reeled in his first white perch of the year and I went to pitch it back that he flipped out.  Reason being…  “that would be a beauty of a perch on the Chesapeake”.  He keeps trying to talk me into keeping them, and one day I might, but for right now I can’t bring myself to contaminate my cooler.

BTW, White perch are actually an invasive species.  They swam up the St. Lawrence Seaway.

white baqss are under utilized in erie. they are great eating fish. we always keep them. a fisherie bioligist told me that in 10 years they will take over the yellow perch. its simple the yellow perch are harvested but noone harvests the white bass.

White bass seem to be more pelagic than the perch.  Perch are bottom dwellers and white bass always seem to be suspended.

They really feed in different layers of the water column, how could they take them over????

after reading your posts from this year, I do realize your not the smartest guy, but really do you think fish live in seperate water columns? they are fish, they live wherever the food is.

    Fillet,

Yes fish DO live where the food is. Different fish, utilize different food sources, and prefer different water temperatures. Thus different fish DO live in different water columns.

I catch white bass all the time perch fishing. they live in the same depths. yellow perch are just more inclined to stay on the bottom. white bass inhabit all depths, right on shore and all the way out to 80ft. i caught 20 white bass tonight fishing for perch right next to a head boat. on my way in i watched white bass eating minnows right of the surface 100yds in front of lampe. white bass are everywhere and are or will become the dominate species. in fact i just ate 2 whities for dinner.

Back in the early/mid 70's the white bass seemed to be everywhere close to shore in the lake. Sure do miss watchin the salmon runs from shore on hot late Aug. nights.  That was somethin to see.

Ever notice perchin' you sometimes can't get your bait to the bottom...

Because the white bass eat it before it can get to the bottom where the PERCH are!  White bass do sometimes inhabit the bottom, but primarily suspend.  I've seen it in huge southern reservoirs, I've seen it in Lake Erie, I've seen it at Shenango.  Watch your fish finder, there are usually schools of bait suspended that feed the suspended 'eyes, whities, sheephead, and steelies.  Bait can also be found at/near the bottom which feeds 'eyes, cats, burbot, perch, etc.

white bass can habitate the same water as yellow perch. They are just more widespread than yellows. Yes, white bass are underutilized as a food fish. They taste great and may be slightly better tasting than yellow perch.

what is the name of the "fisherie biologist?" i'm sure there are many people in the sportfishing/commercial fishing industry that would like info about this.
