Head Boat Bashing!!!

This is really getting old (again).I keep reading the fishing reports from the Edward John and the Victory and each report always has some sort of dig at the other boat. One person goes on one boat and doesnt catch and it is automatically the captains fault because he didnt move often enough another person isnt happy because they didnt go out far enough. If you go out often enough on these boats you would realize that 80% of the time  both  boats are within a few hundred yds of each other and they are always on the marine radio  or cell phone trying to find the fish, these captains have built up  friendships with a lot of other charter captains that are out there on the water, hell  even the headboat captains call each other. You guys that say you have have been out 3-4 times this year and its the same old story of no fish, try watching some the season ticket holders and how they do it or ask them,(you will know who they are)  i would answer or help if asked(rigging weight, hook size ect) as 3 yr season ticket holder on the EJ I can say the last 6 times I have been out all on board have limited  or should have, and  I understand the same is true on board the Victory. I understand the storm last week slowed it down a little though. Any way take these reports with a grain of salt if they are bashing the other boat,, and take the family out and watch the little ones faces when they start catching ..its priceless

Even those of us with our own boats and finders don't get on the fish EVERY time. If you are lucky enough, or savvy enough to find the fish, does'nt mean they are going to co-operate. How many of us have sat over the perch pack on east wind with little or no bite? Probably just me, the crybabies, and the sometimes unlucky captains with boatloads of crybabies.

here's a ?: why are all the fish i mark on the fishfinder swimming from right to left? hmmmm?

That's funny jay, I had a friend one time watching my fishfinder. The boat was pointing west and he told me the fish were going shallower so we had to move because he saw them headed to the left on the screen. I almost fell out of the boat I was laughing so hard

Here is a first hand report.  Ran the Victory last night with 8 people aboard.  Fishing was really good in the morning with 28 people all limited or very near limited.  Went back to the same spot in the evening with a little wind shift to the North and East and found the perch had moved a little to the east of the morning bite.  First drop was white perch and white bass one after another with a few yellows mixed in.  John moved first with a tip from one of his buddies.  In process of me moving a little to the west John called on the phone and said come on over here and that is what I did as well as the whole perch pack followed.  Proceeded to anchor about 300 yards west of the EJ and all on board had enough for their limits or a few fish short.  Excellent night despite the rain.

So to answer your questions. Yes, we do work together.  There are plenty of fish to go around for everyone. No one wants to just sit around not catching anything.  This year has been exceptional perch fishing so far with the best yet to come I believe.  Limits now should just turn into getting limits faster in the coming weeks. Not to mention the perch are just a short boat ride away.

Thanks Capain Mike. I know you all work hard to get the fish and make it a good trip.

Nice to see some PROFFESSIONAL conduct for a change.  While I have never rode the Victory myself I have fished with Captain Mike in the past as well as Captain John of the EJ and I have never had any complaints with captain or crew.  All the guys out there work hard and deserve a fair amount of respect.  It's nice to see the charters working together and the same goes for the head boats. It's a big lake with lots of fish lets all go have some fun.  Take a kid or a newbie fishing!!!!!

Did any of you read that attack some guy made on Capt John and his family, that is why I started this thread,,,,ignorance must be bliss

My aunt has been wanting to get out on Erie for a long time now with my cousin who is 17.  So the three of us are heading up Monday afternoon, weather permitting, to hit either of the head boats.  Whichever one has the best seats remaining when we get there, will be the one we board.  I have fished both and have equal faith in both.  It is so nice when you lack a big water boat like myself to be able to pay a reasonable fair, take just a rod and cooler and go fishing!

In my opinion, it in the best interest of the captains and charters to get along and help eachother out to ensure good business.  As another angler stated, nobody can consistantly catch fish 24/7, we all know those fish move and Erie is a big body of water...their communication and friendships can only be in their own best interest.

I was able to get a trip on the EJ this week with two young nephews.  We had a blast !  Although we did not catch a lot of fish, the two youngsters had a blast.  The Crew on the EJ put us on the fish and moved when we needed moved.  You could tell that they were getting frustrated when the fish stopped biting.  The Victory was always within a few hundred yards of us.  Im sure that the captins were talking to each other.  The lake is huge, and there are more than enough fish to go around.  I have been on the EJ several times, and will stay faithful to them.  I enjoy giving them my business, as I can tell that they try very hard to make the customers happy.  I am sure that the Victory does the same.

i dont care who you are and how good of a fisherman you are. you do not crush fish everytime. watch the professionals on television sometime. they also struggle to catch limits(5-6 fish). $60,000 boats, 20,30,40 years of fishing experience on bodies of water that produce fish and they dont always catch limits. very few go fishing expecting to not catch fish but it does happen.

We went out on Monday July 9th and caught about eight keepers between the four of us.  I think it was the first trip in three weeks that the entire boat wasn't nailing them, according to the reports.  We still had a great time.  That day just adds another chapter to our "I think we have the worst luck" book.  Hoping to go up again soon.  We did catch an entire herd of sheep though.  Hey, at least the fight.  I've been on some head boats in the ocean and the crew was not nearly as nice as the one on the ej.

Fished the EJ today and had a great time. Took over an hour's ride to get to the fish but it was well worth it. Everyone got lots of perch. I got a limit and my buddy was 8 short. Almost won the tee shirt but got beat out with 20 minutes left.

Hey chauncy, Where where you on the boat? I was the big guy on the left side of the boat, right by the bait tank. I would have loved to meet the "crappie master"! I got 27 and my buddy got 22. They really started to turn on shortly before we left. I missed alot today so Im gonna try some braid the next time I go up. Sorry I missed you!

Got to the dock a little late, at 3:45 today.  Boarded the Victory since it appeared to have a little more room.  Both boats were surprisingly full for a Monday night.  Fished with my aunt, cousin and 17 others and it was slow!  The 3 of us managed 7 perch, 3 sheephead, 1 gobi, and 3 clusters of zebra mussels.  Captain Rick talked to the Edward John and they reported slow action as well.  Sunday had limits on both trips and the fishing today stunk .  Had to fish with salted emeralds because nobody can get bait.  This interstate ban is screwing lots of things up!  Oh well, had fun and hope to try again soon.

I'm not saying the perch fishing is any better or worse than years past but I know the bait supply is better, the only reason that I opened a bait shop is because Hanson's closed and old man Harald passed on and Jimmy smith my friend is not well and having a hard time of it. I surely was not going to spend my children's collage tuition on bait at the Greek's.I supply bait to both head boats (most of the time) and if at all possible emeralds are there first choice simply because  perch like them. This time of year the only bait available is golden shiners or fat heads if the truck is not running in from who knows where? there is no bait. Next heat wave out of town bait dealers will not move bait above 85 deg.And at $60.00 a gallon the little bass turds better live at least a day! I move at least 50 Gal. of bait a week and both head boats will agree that there catch ratio increase substantially with emeralds. One thing more I'm just a man who loves to fish and needed bait and wish I would have never opened a bait shop! I work very very hard to make sure people I don't know have good bait at a good price and I eat a lot of guff! for what? And any of you sons of a sea hook think you can fish stop by the bait store when I'm netting bait jump in the boat grab an end of that 100 foot man killer of a net bail over the side in a two foot chop and head to the beach we will see who can fish?
