Fact: Newest technology isn't always the best!

While fishing the Pro division on Sunday myself, my crew and our observer witnessed what we thought was 3 Pro boats, 1 Amatuer boat and ourselves fishing over the US Boundary line in Canadian waters using the information from my Lowrance GPS which has all factory preloaded maps, contours, navigational aids and such. I navigated south into known PA waters and observed 2 of the pro boats and 1 amatuer boat staying in what we thought were Canadian waters again due to the information on my Lowrance. I did what my crew and observer thought I should do and recorded the Longitude and Latitude coordinates, took video of my GPS showing the US Boundary line with my boat on it or just north of it, video of the actual coordinates, video of my compass heading, and slowly took video from facing east looking at my bow through my windshield and turning North looking out my Port window under the hardtop to a Pro boat approx. 1 mile away and again turning Northwest to another Pro boat approx. 2 to 2 1/2 miles away which were clearly in Canadian waters using the information from my GPS. When we made the tournament director aware of the problem the EPSFA rules committee promptly investigated the issue and questioned the Captains of the boats I stated were in Canadian waters. After a timely discussion the official results were put on hold until this accusation was investigated. I was ask if I wanted to go to the boat that I recorded on video with that Captain, John from the rules committee, and the observer of the boat in question. After going on the boat and the Captain showing the track history on his GPS unit it was clear there was a serious mistake and problem with one of the gps units mine or his. At that point I surely agreed that even if that boat was in Canadian waters there was no way of that Captain knowing so. We also entered the L and L coordinates I had on his unit and they were at least 1 to 1 1/2 miles into PA waters. At that point the rules guy John called back to the Tournament director to say the current results would stand and there was a mistake and false information given. At this point I felt horrible BUT knew I was being totally honest with the information I had given. At that point John had said he trusted me and didn't want to see my electronics but I insisted and the Captain of that boat said we should look at my GPS so we did and as they seen all my information was accurate. So now we know theres a problem with one of the units, I did in fact look at a paper chart prior to contacting the Director and that also showed we were in Canadian waters (Just double checking before I started all this trouble). We then boarded another Pro boat at my dock who had a Lowrance and entered the coordinates and his said the coordinates were in Pa Waters, This is where I felt like I was 2 inches tall instead of 6 foot 2". I at that point felt horrible although the fault was of my electronics and out of my control.

I owe an apology to Captain Mike H. (Vision Quest), Captain Bob (Heartbeat), Captain Unknown (Tell No Tales), and not sure who the amatuer boat was.

I did check the coordinates online and all boats were in PA Waters

I contacted Lowrance and gave them the information and they said they would contact they company that does that part of there mapping. They stated there are three to four layers of information they purchase from different companies. Please remember when we all turn on our GPS units they say "DO NOT RELY ON THIS UNIT!"

I did what was right with the information I had to work with and the EPSFA handled the issue very well and very professionally. This will just make the tournament better in the future and help keep everyone honest

I hope this clearifies any rumors that may have or would have arisen about the EPSFA or myself. I haven't fished any other Pro Tournaments but this tournament seems to be well organized and very fair to everyone.

I look forward to next year and look out! Hope to move up in the rankings!

Captain Wayne
"Hawg Wild"

Friend of mine has the same issue.....Generally they are dead on east to west and have issues north to south by about 2 numbers....Its like you are on the old loran numbers, its just another glitch by Lowrance....I believe the newer models have a way to go in and offset the discrepency, but not 100% on how to do that.

Thats why on start up they say do not rely on this as your primary source of navigation.

Capt. Wayne, you did the right thing trying to maintain the integrity of the rules of the tourney.  I have NO PROBLEM with what you did.  I am just glad it was resolved.  I run a Lowrance unit and I know we were close on 1 occassion but my unit still showed us in PA.  Plus-the rules read you just can't catch a fish for the tourney in Canadian waters.  When we were close, I know I saw an AM boat that was at least 1/4 mile north of us and assumed he was in Canada too, but all GPS units claim a tolerance allowance and it was too close to make a call.

Looks to me like you did just fine in your boat Matt.  I get to learn from one of the best and believe me there is always something new to learn.  Wish I could have put a day 2 steelhead box together.

Don't we all Mike.  At least you did Saturday.  We should have, dropped 2 in the last hour and only needed 1.  Steelies are pretty skinny this year.  TOO MUCH WARM WATER!

Yeah I did just fine on my boat, but just think how much better I'd look in a TIARA!!!

I was fortunate to have fished with Captain Mike during the EPSFA Pro Am. It amazed me how much knowledge this young man has and how willing he was to share it.
Mike's response to the protest was absolutely professional, as was the response by the EPSFA rules commitee.
Congratulations to all on a well run tournament!

Dont feel bad, the last couple days my Northstar GPS stated I was trolling at 34 kts. I need a software update which came out early summer this year I was told by Northstar. You did the right thing. Congrats to all the winners and the gentlemen who agreed with your actions. I think you must be commended for your actions and your response. Thank you

How many Tuna did you get at 34 kts????

Wow, I'd say that's off a bit...

They have us coming and going don' they?  Now your unit won't work without their "new" $150 software upgrade.

Amazing.

no actually its a free download to upgrade..LOL you just need to buy the 100.00 cable to upload the new operating system. And then find an older laptop with a 9 pin connector. But other than that its painless. Its all because of a new Military GPS satelight.

Congrats on your win Stormwarning II

Thanks Mr. Damian.

It was nice to finally lift the 50# downrigger ball I've been wearing around my neck for the last 3 years.  Nice to finally get a W out of a lot of close calls.

As a founding member of EPSFA , current director and chairman of the 2008 rules committee for the tournament I wish to give some comments about the recent controversy. To begin, Wayne Chechak  {HAWG WILD}reported what he observed as accurately as possible [which was as I see it  his responsibility as a tournament boat captain to police the rules to see that the playing field is level for all ]. There has been a tremendous amount of time and energy dedicated toward this goal by your association as is evident by the rules. His actions took a serious amount of courage and conviction and I commend him for that. Wayne by is actions gave the EPSFA and the tournament a chance to prove the quality and integrity of the association it's members and your tournament for all to see.

To those that were interviewed I commend them for their cooperation and honesty which again gives credit to the quality and integrity of those involved in this tournament . A very special thank you to Mike Hinkle {VISION QUEST IV} for allowing the rules committee to prove without question that there was a misunderstanding because of different software in various GPS units. He allowed us to view his plotter showing his fishing location during the tournament which clearly showed there could not have been a violation of the tournament rules. The cooperation these individuals gave us was outstanding . The entire group were nothing less than perfect gentlemen. I can truley say that I am proud to have been involved with such sportsmanlike and honorable individuals during the investigation especially Mike Hinkle.   Thank you,  John Scypinski
