Fact: Newest technology isn't always the best! While fishing the Pro division on Sunday myself, my crew and our observer witnessed what we thought was 3 Pro boats, 1 Amatuer boat and ourselves fishing over the US Boundary line in Canadian waters using the information from my Lowrance GPS which has all factory preloaded maps, contours, navigational aids and such. I navigated south into known PA waters and observed 2 of the pro boats and 1 amatuer boat staying in what we thought were Canadian waters again due to the information on my Lowrance. I did what my crew and observer thought I should do and recorded the Longitude and Latitude coordinates, took video of my GPS showing the US Boundary line with my boat on it or just north of it, video of the actual coordinates, video of my compass heading, and slowly took video from facing east looking at my bow through my windshield and turning North looking out my Port window under the hardtop to a Pro boat approx. 1 mile away and again turning Northwest to another Pro boat approx. 2 to 2 1/2 miles away which were clearly in Canadian waters using the information from my GPS. When we made the tournament director aware of the problem the EPSFA rules committee promptly investigated the issue and questioned the Captains of the boats I stated were in Canadian waters. After a timely discussion the official results were put on hold until this accusation was investigated. I was ask if I wanted to go to the boat that I recorded on video with that Captain, John from the rules committee, and the observer of the boat in question. After going on the boat and the Captain showing the track history on his GPS unit it was clear there was a serious mistake and problem with one of the gps units mine or his. At that point I surely agreed that even if that boat was in Canadian waters there was no way of that Captain knowing so. We also entered the L and L coordinates I had on his unit and they were at least 1 to 1 1/2 miles into PA waters. At that point the rules guy John called back to the Tournament director to say the current results would stand and there was a mistake and false information given. At this point I felt horrible BUT knew I was being totally honest with the information I had given. At that point John had said he trusted me and didn't want to see my electronics but I insisted and the Captain of that boat said we should look at my GPS so we did and as they seen all my information was accurate. So now we know theres a problem with one of the units, I did in fact look at a paper chart prior to contacting the Director and that also showed we were in Canadian waters (Just double checking before I started all this trouble). We then boarded another Pro boat at my dock who had a Lowrance and entered the coordinates and his said the coordinates were in Pa Waters, This is where I felt like I was 2 inches tall instead of 6 foot 2". I at that point felt horrible although the fault was of my electronics and out of my control. I owe an apology to Captain Mike H. (Vision Quest), Captain Bob (Heartbeat), Captain Unknown (Tell No Tales), and not sure who the amatuer boat was. I did check the coordinates online and all boats were in PA Waters I contacted Lowrance and gave them the information and they said they would contact they company that does that part of there mapping. They stated there are three to four layers of information they purchase from different companies. Please remember when we all turn on our GPS units they say "DO NOT RELY ON THIS UNIT!" I did what was right with the information I had to work with and the EPSFA handled the issue very well and very professionally. This will just make the tournament better in the future and help keep everyone honest. I hope this clearifies any rumors that may have or would have arisen about the EPSFA or myself. I haven't fished any other Pro Tournaments but this tournament seems to be well organized and very fair to everyone. I look forward to next year and look out! Hope to move up in the rankings!
