Thinking about heading over to Ashtabula, Ohio this weekend to do some Walleye fishing. I'm looking for a campground and launch ramp at Ashtabula. I've launched at ARU before, but never camped there. I've camped many times at Indian Creek camping resport down by Geneva-on-the-lake. That's a very nice campground, but a 10 to 15 mile drive to launch at Ashtabula. I'd rather camp closer to Ashtabula.

How's are the ramps at Ashtabula Lake Shore Park? I've never been there before.

Any suggestions for good launch ramps and / or good campgrounds at Ashtabula would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Brad

Brad,
Not sure I would put your Grady in at Lakeshore Park.  The ramps are very short.  I went in there once with my Gulfstream/bunk trailer, and to load the boat I had the back axle over the end of the ramp and my bunks were still out of the water.  There is a drop off at the end of the ramps.  It is shallow out past the inner breakwall at the ramps, but you can make it if you raise the engines just high enough that the water intakes are just submerged.  I have a friend with a 20' Trophy that won't put in there anymore either.

A Geneva launch, and 10-12 miles out to the fish, is an option (that's where I put in).  I have been getting 4 ticket limits of eyes in a box 00-05/55-50. It depends on the day as to whether the fish will bite better in the Southern or the Northern part of the box.

Thanks for the responses.

As of now, it looks like I'm going to be staying / launching at ARU. It's the only ramp at Ashtabula that I've used before. I used to launch out of Geneva-on-the-Lake state park nearly every weekend (up until about 6 yrs ago). Beautiful launch facility there. But I want to fish the waters due north of Ashtabula so it'd be a little less of a boat ride it I launched at ARU.

Good fishing everyone ! ! !

Launched at ARU this past Sunday morning. Be careful if you launch out of there. There's an area just out from the launch ramps that is about 1 ft deep. Got a few chips on the skeg to show for it. You wouldn't suspect the area to be so shallow. Larger boats (cruisers) docked all around where the shallow area is. You would be inclined to believe the area was navigable. Which is why it would've been nice if they put a marker buoy where the shallow area is. The docks weren't that great either. Short, and had the posts on the outside of the dock. Then you got a couple mile ride down the river to the lake. Been about 7 yrs since I launched out of ARU and I had only launched out of there about 4 times before. Don't think I'll be going back. Despite gas prices, Id rather make the ride by water from Geneva-on-the-lake.

Think I'll be launching out of Geneva-on-the-lake state park this Saturday. That's a launch I've used many times and is one of the nicest facilities I have ever been to on Erie.

Workdog,

Thanks for the numbers. You going to be on the water this weekend?

Brad
