That sucks man. I actually lost my first 9 pounder on a metal stringer. I had it clasped correctly but a guy told me that if the steelhead weighs mores then 5-6lbs. that they usually bend the clasp and get off. I was so upset as I could have limited out for my first time that day. Oh well, more fish to be caught. Trust me, if I catch your fish and stringer I will definitly get a hlod of you and return it. Sorry to hear about you losing your custom stringer.

between Girard Boro Park & Rt 20 in the Am.  And for those who want to know, laziness lost it - tied it around my web belt & didn't check the clip (may have only looped it over like the old westerns where the cowboy just throws the reins over the rail - don't think so tho) Should have held on to it instead of trying to get a drift walking back to the truck. So this brings a question to mind...

If you catch a fish that has a stringer thru its mouth and gills, should you keep that fish?

I would think that the fish may not live much longer since a stringer hurts the gills.

Also it would not be a "fair" hook if you tangled into the stringer.  So you would be poaching, I guess.

What do you all think rules humanity or the laws to the letter?

Well, 1st off I don't stringer thru the gills. my clips are sharpened to poke thru the lower lip (works much better - especially in this case.)  And I would think the fish should be released if caught by the stringer not in the mouth.  That's what I get for trying to keep a fish for a change. If I make the same mistake again you won't hear about on here. By the way found another stringer my friend had made me I thought I had lost.   Now I hope the fish is as lucky and gets caught by a C & R person, he's been thru enough.............Dave

I think once a steelhead has been strung up for more than a very short period of time, his chances of survival if released are minimal even if poked through the lip as was done in this case.  Still, the law against keeping unlawfully caught fish doesn't allow for exceptions, you would need to release it and let it die.  Seems a waste.

Hey Mack, I have a question.  Steelies seem pretty tough... If you didn't hurt the gills and did what Eleph. did through the lip. why would the steelie Die? Esp if some C & R the fish... Just wondering....

Thanks, Joe

Yeah Mack, in retrospect I feel bad about the whole deal. Not because of the lost equip. but my carelessness....... live and learn. Maybe with a little luck it will make it.  If by some far fetched twist of fate I run across it - it gets released (the least I owe that fish)       Dave

I suppose if after having been strung, it sat quietly in well-oxygenated water until escaping, it may not be worse for wear, but typically the fish is strung in slow water, low on oxygen and struggles desperately to escape.  If you walk by most fish that have been strung for more than an hour or so, they will be near-death.  That isn't all about gill damage, but rather oxygen depletion and lactic acid toxicity.  Fish hooked in the lip and played to utter exhaustion suffer the same fate.

Incidentally, my comment about "a waste" was in relation to the scenario where someone later snagged the stringer while fishing-- they'd have to release it.  I think if your own fish got away with a stringer and you "retrieved" it, even by hand, you probably would not be in violation of the law to keep it.  You can't write regulations to cover all these contingencies, but I think retriving your own fish would differ from snagging someone else's.

I'm pretty sure that is the one tippee-toe found. I know he took the fish to PR's to get smoked. He might give you back the stringer. He was thrilled when he found it.

Hey all. sorry about loss. Don't forget what kills most trout, although some seem much stronger, is lactic acid build-up. All stressed trout ,and steelhead,  which we all know are a strain of trout, are prey to this effect. It is too bad the state will make you KILL a fish ,that could be put to use. Instead of putting it back in to be racoon dinner.MackJ was right on about the lactic acid issue. Do not feel bad You are not the only one who has lost a stringer. There are more out there.

Don't feel so bad.  A few years ago I was fishing for Eyes in Canada and I did the dumbest thing ever.  I put the stringers hook in the fish closed it then promptly threw it over the side of the boat, and watched the fish and stringer go bye bye,  I forgot to tie the stringer to the side of the boat.

That was the only fish I caught that evening.

I caught a fish on a green stringer couple weeks ago and released the fish and threw the stringer in the garbage in the boro park.
