My first from an Erie Trib, and yes, public water.

When did PA stop stocking these guys?  1980s?

Is it?  I'd like to know why if it is.

The white gums?

But the spottling on the tail is all king.

The spotting on the sides, and belly is all king.

I'm not good at guessing weight, 8-10 lbs, maybe.

It wasn't huge or anything.

Looks like a king from the spots (top and bottom of the tail). The outside gums are pretty white though like a Coho. Do you have a better picture of the mouth showing the inside?

Makes you wonder about natural reproduction, or was he a good swimmer!

Nice fish no matter what species. Congrats! A day to remember for sure!

I do not have a better mouth picture.  When I got it in, I couldn't believe it was a salmon.  I wanted to make sure I got a bunch of pictures, because of the mouth.  Then it started flipping around a bit, and thought it's best that I release it now, just in case there's any chance at all of it reproducing, you know.

I thought I had a good mouth shot, but don't.  The lower mouth was black, and grey.  But the gums do look more white than black for sure.

Can Kings and coho's mate?

Stillhead walked right passed me as I was reeling it in.  Should've asked his opinion, but I don't like to bother guides who are with clients.  Stillhead, duud, that well worn Pens hat sticks out like a sore thumb.  You hooked up your guys right below me around noonish, Friday.  I moved up to give you guys some more room, and hooked that fish.  I hadn't landed a fish all day until he showed up, maybe he brought the luck?

My prediction....
This thread will be 5 pages long about if it's a king/coho, how PA should stock them again, whether or not it's was "lined" (lol), caught in 1998?, if it was REALLY caught in NY, if it was a photshoped pic of a last year's sucker, OR if the only reason he caught it was because he was chumming....lol  Just messing around!

Nice fish!

I chummed it.

With cigarette butts, lead split shot, 2/0 trebbles, plastic coke bottles, beer cans, half a gallon of coffee urine and a McDonalds bag.  Threw it all in the creek, then it bit my fly.  Chumming works!

I don't want to sound like an a$$ or anything but I am honestly just curious...

Why do people always place their rod/reel setup in the water to get a picture of the fish laying next to their setup? Is it to get an idea of the size of the fish compared to the rod? Doesn't it affect the reels since they are always in the water? I would think that the reels bearings would begin to get rusted. Again, just a question. Not judging anyone here.

I do it only for perspective, as you said.

I have not noticed any degrading of my drag systems in various reels, maybe I will some day though.  Hopefully not.

I will say, that if it's a very cold day, much below freezing, I will not put my reel in the water, for fear of the drag icing up.

I see. I just would hate to see someone ruining their expensive reels for a picture. But now I know. I should start doing that, like you said, for the perspective. It definitly lets viewers see the comparision. Thanks!

That fish is without a dought a king salmon..Not sure were everyone seems to get the idea the entire space in the mouth has to be black. If you look close you can see lots of black outlining the teeth its just not full black. Also as others have stated that fish has way tomany spot in tail, anal fin, pec fins to ever be a coho. The last Pa stocks of any kings for Lake Erie was 1992. This fish is most likely a long traveler from Lake Huron as is pretty much all the Pink salmon we get. Anyways big congrads to you , you got the needle in the haystack for sure...

It's a King!  And a pretty fresh one at that!  Hard to find them that fresh in NY this time of year.  He doesn't have many battle wounds either but why would he?  Not much competition in PA!!  Nice fish, congrats!!

pafisher,

That sounds like a good idea but its like impossible to change thier mentality on the salmon acualy hitting. Belive me I have tried plenty of times. Have had days landing 20 plus kings all mouth hooked inside the mouth infront of the snaggers and they still argued with me that they will not hit. I blame this on the state of NY for ever having snagging legal in the first place.
