Anybody have much luck on crappie at Kahle? I've caught bass and perch there, but only a few crappie. Most of the crappie I've caught have been in the spring around spawn. I've had a tough time finding them at other times. Anybody else have much luck on this lake for crappie?

slabseeker, fished kahle alot in past few years. caught them by the beaver huts, out from rocks lining the shoreline, brushpiles, and by dam. by the dam fish 4-6 ft. down using jigs or maggots. shoreline to right of gatehouse is good for crappie. sharp drop-off there crappie seem to hang there most of the time.if u can find them, there is rock piles out from both shorelines that hold crappie.near the dam.  in spring, area near spillway along cattails holds big bluegill.always spawn there.white split tail jigs worked for me. hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I hope we get a few more decent days before winter. I would like to give it a try. I fished Shenango Tuesday and caught a few nice crappie early in the morning and then they seemed to shutdown and I couldn't get a bite after that.

I've been fishing for bass and walleye most of my life. Only recenelt have friends been talking me into trying for crappie.
My questions:
Is there any difference with rods/reels you use for crappie? I have 14 rod/reel combos and don"t really want to buy more equipment.

What lures do you use? Anything very different from worms, jigs, poppers, spinner baits that I have been using for bass? Again, I don't really want to start buying lures again.

Finally, at this late in the season, where are they hitting? I live near the Pgh. airport but can get to Hopewell, Cross Creek, Pymy, Wilhelm, Arthur, and Raccoon. I don;t know about other places, but I'll find them if they exist.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

BTW: Weather forecasts for next week indicate a few nice days/ If any of you boaters are going to go out and want a rider, I'll gladly kick in for gas.

donpgh,
Your bass fishing rods should work okay, but you might want to consider a 4-6 lb test line. I've seen people catch crappie with all kinds of equipment. I use small 1 1/2" tube jigs most of the time. Live minnows are used alot too. They usually bite pretty well this time of year, if you can locate them. Can't really tell you where they are biting as I haven't fished those lakes you've mentioned. I used to do real well at Wilhelm, but haven't fished it lately and most reports I have heard from the lake are not real good.

couple small things to add;  If your used to fishing for bass, crappie fishing is scaled back.  go way smaller for crappie.  Use a slower approach.  jigs, espacially little ones, are the Main crappie lure.  I don't know if many of your bass lures are small enough.  You'd probably be better off to put some money into some stuff.  The little jigs and cheap and effective.

Consider suspending beneath a bobber.  Around these parts little jigs, slowly brought in with a twitching motion seems to be the best technique.  Sometimes, with crappies leaving it still for a few seconds makes all the difference.

And remember the soft mouth.  bass have a tough mouth and your probably used to a pretty firm hookset so you don't lose them due to jumps.with crappies and espacially on a bobber, its not even exactly a jerk. its more of a drag and the crappies hook themselves.

When I fish for bass; I try to make a ruckus on the water.  when I fish for crappie I think finesse and slow twitches.

Most of my experience is during spring spawning, so I can't give much insight on where they are this time of year.  If your still interested after iceout, you can get into some pretty incredible fishing during the right night.

Joile,

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it try ASAP. I do have small lures, small tube jigs, and bobbers. I'll put them in my bag and try them all out.

Don

I was there last week and the level is down about 10 ft. No good for shore fishing as there is all weeds. John
