I guess with it being October we probably shouldn't be jumping the gun too far just yet. Heck, I'm still content to "listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul" for at least a few more weeks... As for ice fishing yes, SOF, on the best days of fishing, I spend my day staring at the vex, stopping only to mingle with friends, take in the scenery etc. Most days though take a combination of patience, luck, and drilling a **** load of holes with the power auger. As for tip-ups, every single person that I have shown the vex to, at this point no longer fishes with tip-ups, they just jig with the vex - we are talking about over dozen people now. i will admit, ice fishing in a shanty with the vex does loose a bit of the social appeal of ice fishing, however, I usually take enough "relaxation breaks" to keep myself out of the shanty and conversing with friends a good portion of the day. Plus, I can fish up to three in my fish trap yukon...Talk about a clam bake! I even devoted a morning to fising tip ups last year at the end of ice. I set up a half dozen tip-ups around me, and they were constantly going off, with big yellow perch and crappies on their end - but ya know what, I was jigging them up hand over fist too, and that was just more fun! I ended up just pulling in the tips after an hour or two, and jigged'em like usual.
