Identity theft/fraud question - 11/5/2008 10:28:27 AM

Last night my wife was going through our home emails and asked me if I had been shopping for online car quotes because there were several replies about requests. Neither of us have been car shopping.

This morning I got a call from a dealer concerning my so-called request. Is there something I can do to check into this to make sure someone isnt messing around with my credit or do u think this is an honest mistake? Is a credit report check enough?

The only info that was incorrect was my address info given to the dealer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated?

Credit report check might be in order. If you have a good relationship with a local bank, they'll usually run a check for you. Good luck!

If you have a credit card, call their customer service number.  Most major credit cards will put a fraud alert on all of your credit cards.

Also, contact one of the major credit report firms - names escape me right now, but you could probably google "fraud alert" or something like that - and put a fraud alert on your credit.

The internet is particularly insidious in terms of publicizing your information.  There's a few online communities (MySpace among them), that when I visit (not even log on, just stop to check on friends' pages), my spam folder gets a flood of spam for about a week afterward, for everything from e-hookers to discount prescription drugs.  What really concerns me about your post is the phonecall.  I'd also talk to the people that called you to see where and when they heard from "you".

Other sources can pimp out your information too.  I once did a survey at a bar to get my friend a few packs of free cigarettes, and within a month I was getting 3 telemarketer calls, on my cell phone, every week, for about 3 months.  Unlike the typical ones, some of these telemarketers were quite rude.  Once I found out where they got my number, I called that company and got them to cease distributing my phone number after some tense words.  Its a real shame the way some of these places operate.

Steeleys -

Keep in mind too that if you have a fraud alert, any time you try to open a new line of credit, you will need to remember that you have the alert.

Happened to me a few years ago when trying to buy a car.  Forgot I had the alert on, and couldn't for the life of me figure out why they were denying my credit application because our credit rating is excellent.  Finally my wife remembered and we got the car.
