Nothing too fishing related about this post, just thought I'd throw up a few cell phone pics of the ice piled on the causeway(just below the  former  Sleepy Hollow Tavern).  I thought it was pretty interesting.   A week of single digit temps followed by Monday being above freezing with some rain and here's the result:

wow, i don't drive through there too often, but I have not seen a buildup of ice like that in a while. Might have to do a drive by today to check it out.

The ice piles have been pretty impressive.  The channelized stretch of water just upstream of Kingston dam was a quarter mile of piled ice, you couldn't even see any creek at all.  That's ALOT of ice.

Yep, Tavern was torched by a local over some money and a lady.  He  should  have gone fishing instead....

Nice photo.......I wonder where the campfire gang is hanging out.  You know the ones that build a fire and drink beer almost everynite during the summer

Ligonier,
Just how thick was that ice? I'd say about 6 inches.

I made the mistake of trying to fish the causeway last summer on a wednesday evening...it was packed!  When I started fly fishing downstream a bit in vest & hip boots, those people were so stymied by fishing like that, they nearly dropped their beers and fell off their lawn chairs!

I got the impression I was no longer welcome to entertain them after catching a half dozen smallies to their zero fish of any type.

Looks like open water just below the causeway now, though!

Hey gang,

Forgot I posted this, strolling through and yes, alot of those ice chunks is at least 6" thick.  I eat lunch at this site nearly every day(hangin' on to my Kennametal job by the skin of my teeth) and got some great pics of the Latrobe Waterworks guys out on the ice chunks/causeway, checkin' it all out.  What makes them interesting is that you can only see them from the waste up.  There really is a ALOT of ice piled on that concrete.  I'll have to get the pics off the phone and load em up.

The fire ring crew....this is the beer drinkingest, dope smokingest spot on the Loyalhanna during the heyday of summer.  And they like to toss the trash around, burn car tires, etc.  There was a heroin related shooting here a few years back.  It's beautiful country and a decent smallie stream(personal wish: give up on stocking trout and stock smallies in this creek) but yeah, the locals can be a bit unnerving.  I'm a local but arson, drugs, shootings, it tends to steer a guy elsewhere.....

I never realized it was decent for smallies, is that up or down from the causeway, or both directions.  I fished for trout a few times there.

The whole stream has smallies in it. But it's better below Kinlock dam downstream.

No longer current, went by today and the causeway is UNDER some serious current.

Loyalhanna = BLOWN OUT!

Saw one brave/hopeful guy flinging flies at the mill creek confluence, out into the chocolate milk.
