Howdy I do all kinds of fishin but just started to head out at night too al sorts of verious places, like lake plesant for instance.  When I turn on my lantarn I get attacked by bugs out the ying yang, and I use bug rapalants but if it works only for about 10 minutes before I have to reapply which gets very annoying seeing how I have to watch my line  Any advice to how to beat these little suckers off would be great help, tips, anything
Good luck thanks

Long sleeve shirts/pants. Try not to sweat (this attracts them more than anything). Buy some of those citrusnelli (spelling?) candles. But for the most part, you just need to keep spraying down with OFF.

There is a little device that actually keeps them away.  It's made by William Joseph and if I remeber correctly it costs around ten dollars.  It's also solar powered so you never have to buy batteries.  I bought one even though I thought it was a gimmick.  It really works.  It doesn't prevent all the bites but it does a really good job!

Take some dryer sheets and tie them to your hat..Works.....Thermocells work, but sometimes when they are really heavy, they don't take them all away....

Dryer sheets like "Bounce" worn over the back of the neck under a hat works well. I would also tie one in a belt loop to the right and left side.

hey, i fish there at night and hear the loud splash sound as well. as crazy as it sounds, i beleive it's coming from beavers. They'll swim at the surface and then smack thier tails down into the water to propel themselves to swim fast under the water. i've seen it happen before at another lake and the sound is identical. its a very deep sounding thunk. i was a little nervous out there the first time i heard it lol

Take a spray bottle full of Listerine and spray down the decks on your boat, even spray it on your clothes. It smells good and bugs hate it. When I have a party, I spray down my entire deck. We never have problems with biting insects. Sounds crazy, but it works. Also, if you are fishing, light up a cigar.

Am I the only one who finds using a solar powered device while night fishing amusing?

I agree smoking keeps them away, and dont squish any. Seems like when you kill one, the rest get angry and attack.

Thanks you all for the grate tricks, I made it out too try and catch some trouts and I put some luandry sheets on my hat and kept a few even near my belt.  Haha I looked like a crazy man but it was dark so who cares  For the most part I was in good conndtion but I stayed on the shore so my lantarn was not lit so didnt have as many bugs to beat, or it seemed that way, maybe a spider or two.

Those tips are vary helpful, I will am looking forward to trying all of them when I can make it back on my boat, just never did like the bug spray stuff cause it gets pretty annointing to reapply every so often.

ps  yes, perhaps it is that is a beaver, never really even thunk of it, but man it was pretty unerving to hear.

God bless good luck!

I keep it hooked on my fishing pack so it's always in the sunlight.  Then when you go fish at night, the battery is always charged and you just push the little "on" button and you are good to go.  Don't know how long a fully charged battery will last but I have stayed overnight on the river and it was still working in the morning.

I've fished the Adirondaks where you could literally grab 4-5 deer flies out of the air, plus the numerous attacks from horseflies and the prolific black flies and no-see-ums. The best remedy I ever came across was "Old Woodsman" made someplace in Vermont. The formula was oil of tar (kerosene), camphor, citronella, with a mineral oil base. I've made my own, as you usually can't find it locally. It has an odor (not unpleasant but different), but it works and lasts pretty good. I've heard of Listerine too, but never tried it! Rubbing alcholol takes the sting out of most bites!

Make sure your meal before going out has plenty of garlic and vinegar. Works like a charm for me. All the sprays, ect. always seemed to make me sweeter for the bugs. AKA, the repellants never worked for me.

I was at a party last night and was getting bit until this guy pulled out this device he said that he got it at gander mountain , Its powered by butane and you put a sent pack on the frount , after awhile the thing started smokeing and not a single bug was around, I was really suprised how well it worked , it also comes with a strap so you can hook it to your belt, I'm gonna pick one up this week and i'll let you know the name of it but it does work really well and he said that he spent around 20 for it.
