Status: offline 		Hunted on a game lands up North(Lycoming Co.). Hit the grunt tube at about 3 pm. Look up and here comes a buck. Large body(about 180 lbs) but smaller rack, 8 pts. He gave me a perfect 20 yard broadside shot. Watched him sniff everything(had some estrous scent out). But I let him walk. Hope I don't regret it!! Heard another buck chasing a doe around for about 15 min. Never saw them(very foggy). 10 years ago I would not of even thought twice about shooting him. Lucky for him I shot a doe on the 12th, but I still would not have shot him. I am definately seeing bigger bucks year after year. I love ARs!!!!  The proof is in the woods.  Just my  2 cents.   Good Luck guys! You have to go IN the woods to see the deer.

Many 11/2 year old bucks in PA are carrying "small" 8 point racks. That is NOT a deer to kill "from a management standpoint".

Status: offline 		Passing on a buck to let him live another day cannot be a bad thing.  Since you are comfortable doing it, and it added to your total enjoyment and satisfaction of your hunting season only puts the exlamation point on that.

I share the same perspective on things as you.  You cannot shoot a big buck if you never let the small ones go.......unless you get lucky that the first buck to walk by you is the big one!  People who have never done this, or don't share that same mentality for whatever reason will "Never get it".  To each his own.  You've obviously reached a point in your hunting life where you have the willpower to let him go for good reason.......and that reason only has to be good for you.

Don't let what anyone else says tell you different.

Good luck to the rest of your season and I hope you do see that bigger one you are hoping for.  Good things come to those who wait.

Status: offline 		and I should add, some peopel think "well if I don't shoot it someone else will".  Yeah, I hear you alot of people would do that.

But alot of peoples views have and are changing to the opposite.  That next big buck you will shoot might very well have been given a second chance on life by another hunter just like you who let him walk in his younger times.

Sometimes, you just have to have a little faith in others in addition to the confidence in your own skills and judgement.

Status: offline 		nothing better than letting a 2 year old walk and the next fall seeing him come chasing a doe under the stand and he is a 130 class deer.

Status: offline 		I am glad that those of you that choose to wait, have the right to do what you choose to. Those of us that don't want others to make up our minds for us would like to have the same chance.Is that really that hard to understand? If you are waiting for a 130 class buck, why not wait for a 150 or 160? If it is going to be A.R. then make it the same for everyone.  As far as more people accepting AR,now that licenses are computerised I would like the PGC issue licenses designating whether you can follow AR or not, for say, 5 yrs,this could eaily be done & would decide how many really want this.  sam

Many 1.5 basket racks are killed each year and they are no where near 180 lbs. Passing on this buck was a good idea unless it was 180 lbs and then it should have been taken out of the herd.

I know VERY few people who can accurately guess a deer's weight when they are standing next to it much less while it is still walking. I was assuming the original poster was "guessing" the weight leaving his assessment of the antlers a much more accurate "guess". My statement still stands---GOOD FOR YOU for letting him walk. Hopefully, if the deer "has to die" this year it will be at the hand of a Junior. If it doesn't get killed this year you can count on him being a VERY nice, fat two year old next fall.
