Just thought I'd let everyone in on whats been going on with Hereford Manor Lake. If your from around Beaver or Zelienople you probably have seen that the Lake has been threatened to be drained for quite some time. Regardless of anything that's been thrown around now, Hereford Manor Lake will be drained next year. Unless a solution is given. To save you some time, mainly the dam is alittle behind times and doesn't keep up with OUTRAGEOUS standards.. something like 30 some inches in acouple days (that it can restand..). Being part of the Hereford Manor Conservancy & Watershed Group frankly I've been disappointed about anglers alike. Many who fish there regulary know that Hereford is a well known lake, and is used quite a lot by the public. Normally 15-20 people show up at the group meetings. Please, if your a regular or yearly angler at our beautiful lake go to Herefordmanorlake.org. Become a member, and voice your opinion. Because before long.. the beautiful lake we all love, will be gone.

Thats a shame . Did you send your letters in to the governer ? Mine went Monday hopefully he reads them? Those lakes have some of the best water quality that may be found in Beaver/Butler counties it won't be the same without them. DC

Thanks for your posts guys. Yes, both Upper & Lower will be drained. Dream Catcher, as I know I think he does read them. I was in Zelienople for horse trading days and he said the project against the draining was a "great project". I totally agree with you as well. No lake in either Beaver or Butler is as clean, nor as beautiful. I was just up there this Morning and caught this beautiful 15 inch red rainbow. These are the types of reasons why it shouldn't be drained. Such a wonderful place. The only good I see of it draining is a little bit of curiousity. I mean what do you think is at the bottom? Jimmy Hoffa? haha. Thanks guys.

Wasnt there reports of a sturgeon or something in there. that'd be sick, but it's most likely a bigfoot. Or an octopus.

I know it's probably a drop in the bucket for them, but if they're are definitely draining it next year, then why is the fish commissioners still wasting their money and fish stocking fingerling saugeye that wouldn't be legal for three years anyhow.  This whole mess is a joke!  So they are going to drain Herford and make anyone that wants to fish for trout go to Slippery rock, or Big sewickley or little con where half of the shoreline is posted anyhow.  Guess I'll have to get a sportsman club membership next year so the kid can have somewhere to wet a line for trout.

Startinout, I totally get what your saying. I think the boat & fish Commission was really hit by it being possibly drained. Many projects, like you said, have been started and I'm pretty sure they're thinking its going to get drained. Check out the stocking dates, Upper has none this year or next. If drained the Upper lake would be first. And yeah.. not to excited about going up to Slippery Rock. Hereford's 12 minutes, Slippery Rock's 50 from my house. Sides after about June 15 you can expect most of the trout to be gone. Also not to excited about maybe joining a club. The closest has only bass and fish I'm not to fond off. Let's hope for the best!

Deadbolt, Yeah I am actually kind of interested to see what kinds of fish are in there. Some people said they were catching walleye there.. but considering the guy had a Jack Daniel's in his hand I didn't exactly believe him. It'll be sad though....

Enough "walleye" to target them.  Actually saugeye.

I can confirm the saugeye in there . they have nice size as well . As for the sturgeon that thing is long gone . It was put in thier before I was born when it was a paylake but was also a true story.

as for walleye in that lake, watched a man and his son, fishing to right of boat launch, catch a 28" walleye on a small fathead under bobber, i also have caught many legal size walleyes in lower lake since it went from paylake to open lake, always late evening into the wee hours of morning, what is reasoning for draining, upper was just done, another great fishery going to the wayside, hard to beat the manor

You can catch them on stickbaits and popper type lures at night in the spring/early summer just like at lake Arthur.

That is not good. I used to go there as a teenager with my family and fish the both lakes. Used to love to see the muskies cruising the surface of the lake in the morning from the upper dam, you could see their wakes. Caught some nice bass in the summers. Very clean water and the only thing I can think is that the dam is outdated and some "green" people think all of Zeli will be flooded someday soon and many lives will be lost.

May have to get there soon before it is gone.

fiyfisher,i would use creek shiners out of connie or brush creek,in the 3 to 4 inch range, these shiners are full of action, there are plenty walleyes in there, well were, dont know of last couple yrs, also some huge largemouth, lakes are full of surprises, i would fish that wall as a kid when it was a pay lake, unbelievable, now unless in a boat, wall is off limits, damn

That would be a shame to lose such a nice lake and rec. area. My dad took me there 50 years ago and have fished it many, many times since. Saw a young man catch a super nice walleye the first day of trout 10 or so years ago. I would go to my grandmothers house for Thanksgiving and fish the morning away there. Lets hope they can save it.

Mikeastorm, You wouldn't happened to of been there last Thanksgiving? Windy as ever. Anyway I was up there this morning.. caught 2 rainbows and 1 real nice fighting crappy. Ever think the Manor could become a nice crappy and bass fishing lake as well? But was there for around 5 hours, the crowd very small.

Since they drained it down a little, it seems like the upper lake is full of crappies.  A lot of smaller ones though.

My daughter caught a 16 1/2 inch crappie in the upper lake last year.  We came home that day with four over 12 inches.  have been back several times only to catch small ones.

There were reports of a a Sturgeon(s) in there. From what I understand when it was a pay lake years ago the owners had one or two in a pen for customers to see. I grew up not far from there and had aways heard stories of one being seen, although I never saw it.

We always did well on the upper lake way way in the back to the left. We would just crush the trout back in there. I may need to take a hike here  soon and see how it looks back there. I just moved back to the area and gotten into fishing again after a lull. Before I got divorced fishing was a RELIGION to me and Herford was one of my sanctuaries. Esp the wee ponds behind the lower lake

Penn_artist, I think I know where your talking about.. like its a covee right? Yeah... definately some fish there. I mean it's shaded and pretty cool. Friend told me he saw a Palomino in there. That's definately a good spot. And yeah I wonder about the sturgeon. Obviously they need deep water so who knows..
