I am working on tying some sculpins. I have never worked with wool before and i was wondering what is hte best way to form the head... and I got zonker strips for the tail portion. What should the body be composed of?

I have found the easiest method to form heads with the wool is to tie them in in clumps. You can just tie a clump or 2 or top and do the same for the bottom. I like to pinch wrap them in and allow them to slide around the shank a bit. Once you are finished you can use a dubbing teaser to fill in the empty areas and then trim to your desired shape.

If I am making a body out of wool I use a dubbing loop, this seems to keep me from using too much material and helps to keep the material uniform.

There are tons of different materials that work to tie sculpins. The one I mainly tie uses a marabou tail, a zonker tied on the top of the shank for the body(leave the zonker extend to the length of the tail in the back), fur dubbing underbody and a wool head. I am sure if you look around you will find dozens of different patterns.

An acquaintance is the master of "guide flies" -- easy, cheap and fast to tie, and the heck with aesthetics. Oh, yes, and fish have to like 'em.

He simply wraps on wool yarn using the occasional thread wrap as reinforcement.

Another alternative to try is marabou which dubs nicely, if you haven't tried it. When I tie wooly buggers I sometimes save stripped fibers from the tail as dubbing. Waste not, want not.

You can tie a sculpin in a Clouser fashion. They are pretty easy. They also work. Last season, my dad hooked a sculpin on a little nymph on Elk during the first large run. He pulled it it, then rolled it back where it came from, and a nice steelhead grabbed it as soon as it hit the water. He actually hooked the steelie, but it got off.
