Help me make a questions and answer thread regarding steelhead fishing in Erie. Im going to pin a thread on top that will answer a lot of new and old angler's question about where to go, how to fish spin or fly, etc.

So post a question that we commonly read on here along with an answer!

I will update this as we go and post them on the pinned thread on top!! Thanks to all who participate!!

My question though is...Can I use Fly Fishing flies with my 10ft. Noodle/Spinning reel set-up? Was not sure if this is okay or not? Thank you.

Answer:You can do it you jsut have to go about it the right way. First, if you use a leader/mainline setup you want to have a thin leader I would reccomend some good flourocarbon tippet for fly fishing which I'm sure that any of the bait shops in the area can guide you to a good brand they carry.

Next, there is a reason that fly line is weighted, flys are not. Also do not expect to get the hits you see bait anglers getting with there floats getting completly sunken under. Almost always it will be a small twich, in clear water it may be just a quiver. This brings up your choice in floats. It has to be big enough to support enough weight to make it heavy enough to make casting easy but small enough to be sensitive.

A noodle rod is very suitable for this method and try to do as the fly fishers do and you should do fine.

Question:How do I add pictures

A:
"You need to store the picture in a site like photobucket then use the http// address.

Resize
pictures to around 600x something before loading into your storage site

Put the link into the Add image icon
  above where you write.

I use Faststone for editing photos.
It is a free download and is very easy to use.

Photobucket is also free

After you do it once it is pretty easy.

Only use one http// in the add image box-there is one in the box and one in the link.

For more info look at this thread I started

Help for those that need it posting pictures .

Can I use my 5wt rod for steelhead?
No! Unless you are very experienced and want to incur the wrath of others on the stream while you fight the fish.  Stick with 7-9wt with 2x-3x leaders.  If you need smaller go with a light tippett.

Is it acceptable to leave your rod on the ground on any steelhead stream where there will likely be others walking behind you at least once if not hundreds of times per day?

No.

Continuing further:

Q.  If I have have to leave my rod behind to step off into the woods or help another angler, how can I avoid having it broken by an unsuspecting pedestrian?

A.  Place your rod against a tree, standing it upright so that persons walking by are unlikely to accidentally trample it.  Along these lines, place all equipment somewhere nearby but off of the pathways or other areas likely to be traveled by others.

I really disagree with the breaking off of the foul-hooked fish.  Disease and the propensity of that unremoved fly/hook to get tangled in other lines is very high.  The net result is that the fish my become illegally hooked over and over.  I really wish people would re-think this practice.  Plus, the same people complain about fish looking like X-mas trees.

If I ruffled a few feathers with this post, I am sorry.  I really am against it though.

I know what you're saying Grendal... but last year I got no less than half a dozen flys off of fish I caught that had broke other people off. One fish had one in it's mouth and 2 in it's belly. Amazing...I cleaned the little fella up and sent him on his way..

Sorry didn't mean to hijack the OP

I agree, if you can get the foul-hooked fish in to hand quickly without disturbing others or exhausting the fish.    Otherwise, break it off.

It's my favorite fly for swinging in big, or off-color water- developed primarily for winter fishing in BC waters like the Dean or Kispiox...PM me your address and I'll send you one.

On Pa streams there is no need for a fly rod of over a 5 or 6 wt.  Oh and NY are different, and even there the heaviest I use is a 7wt. which lands Salmon River Kings up to 40 lbs. with no problem.  I have never heard another angler gripe at someone because their rod was too light.  My personal favorite is a 4 weight 9' St. Ultra Legend in most situations with 4X tippet.

I saw this among the new patterns in the Orvis catalog and decided it would be my new "when all else fails" steelhead pattern.  They call it Eggi Juan Kenobi:

Griffon,
These questions and anwers are more geared towaard the novice steelhead angler. Most novice anglers will have trouble handling a steehead on such a lite rod. Even though a 5 wt rod can tame even the freshest fish, a better choice for the beginner would be a 6 or higher! IMO!

This will be my first trip for steelhead, or I'm making a ___ hour drive, where should I go to catch some so it's not a wasted trip?  Are the steelhead as far as _____ on ______ Creek yet?

Start by looking at the angler maps: http://www.fishusa.com/FishErie/Maps.asp

And read the stream descriptions: http://www.fishusa.com/FishErie/StreamDescriptions.asp

Although they can be a zoo during prime time (and even in non-prime time), it's never a bad idea for a newbie to start low on Elk or Walnut and work your way upstream or away from the acess areas.  There are ALMOST always some fish in these areas.

If you want to know a general idea of how far fish have made it upstream, or how a stream has been fishing in the last few days, call one of the shops listed here: http://www.fishusa.com/FishErie/Bait.asp

That's it, though mine are a little fuller, and not quite the same color. I'm sending out a few to those who requested them!
