To make a long story short, I just moved back to Pa from Alaska.  I’d like to fish the Salmon River for Kings.  I need a little help form those that know.

When is a good time to do a charter in the lake?
When is a good time to fish the lower stream?
And when are there fishable number throughout the stream (I’d like to float it).

Thanks In advance.

There are minor runs in the river in Aug but the water temps are usually to high for good fishing. Mid Sep has truly fishable numbers and conditions. More fish upriver towards the end of the month. Of course weather patterns trump all of this. Years like last year and almost no fish get upriver. Pay your nickle and take your chances.

If there is water in the river the fish will be top to bottom by the first of October. As said before they show up late Aug but mid Sept they are thick on the lower river, check back in Aug for more chatter.
You can charter a trip early summer on,depending where you charter. It starts early in the western basin and moves east.Contact the captains and get their views.

fish the lake in a charter boat from mid august through mid october
the lower section of the river (the dsr) will have spotty runs late in august through september
if you want to fish the river, wait 'til october for the king action
the coho's run first, but they are hard to predict and they run the whole river in a day or two
the kings are more predictable and they tend to hold in the main river longer
if you want a couple really good guides for float trips, send me an e-mail and i'll get you in contact with them

and any other questions you have just fire away
