They raised the water to 750 cfs on Friday night. Major run as we speak.
I guess they heard I left town

Comin up friday can anyone tell me how far the salmon river is from point breeze (oak orchard) area. Have been thinking about maybe trying to make a run there if it's not to far.

About one hour away. Don't worry about the "BIG RUN". I was there and it wasn't black with fish or bank full. The kings are moving real slow, the coho's are doing their usual zipping thru but not in any huge numbers. The eggs are still tight in the females so mid October is looking more like the peak now. Also the steelhead and browns are mostly down low and seem content on staying there. You all still have plenty of time. Talking to people who have been there since August, they say the big run has not happened yet. Some good pushes yes but no major run.

friend of mine was up today and called back with a report. 18 hook-ups and 2 landed. 1 king and 1 coho. said the coho was a beaut. nice and pink. he saw other fish caught but tough to land in that kind of water.
I am headed up on the 10th and 11th. I to am hoping to hit some fish.

Funny how they report a major run & all that. People on all the sites also reported the estuary was loaded & all that. Not sure, but I think I reported not seeing much of anything in the estuary when I was up. I saw very few.
I don't claim to know much, but BS is BS...
Columbus day week it will be on like Donkey Kong.

I was up there this past friday-sunday. lots of fish moving through the water...and yes, saturday evening the salmon river estuary was LOADED with fish. I have honestly never seen anything like it in my life....so that up to 750cfs from friday evening until monday evening prooooobably got them moving out of there i'd say.

Probably wont see many locals reporting this week

Cool. Of coarse I left on Thursday. There was a Salmon jumping here & there, but that's about it.
I may get up in late Oct. & hope for better numbers of Steel. Wish I could have gotten into a nice Brown, but such is life..

Charlie,

There have been fish in the river since mid-late august. Plenty of them. Go up and fish like you were fishing for stripers, if you fish for stripers. You know 1-2 good stripers is a very good day. Or fish for salmon like you were fishing a nice river for trout. Keep your expectations real, fishing the right way is very rewarding when you hook up with 3-5 fish a day and land a few. Most anglers who fish the SR and tribs are way too spoiled and anything less than seeing and hooking(fair or foul) large numbers of fish is considered a mediocore trip; don't let yourself fall into that group. There a very few rivers in this world where you would have large numbers of hook-ups per day such as the SR, and the days are coming of having 10 or so hook-ups a day being a great day. The best way to get away from the crowds and have the best fishing is fish the oxygenated water, I mean right in the most turbulant white water that you can find. They will be there. Also, keep your weight to a minimum, another trap that most anglers fall into is using way too much weight. You will be surprised at how many more solid hook-ups you will have.  Best of all, you won't be hooking up the bottom much, wasting fishing time, and losing gear.

Enjoy, maybe I'll see you on the river.

Tight lines,

OldSalt
