I am trying to get a date straight for a little shin-dig (or Mini Tourney?) at my place on Snyders Lake.  For all you Albany cats looking to hang out sometime...  I am like 15min from downtown- near North Greenbush and Wynantskill just across the Hudson...

Should be easy access for most of the guys I hear from...

I am thinking of a Saturday in August...  If all goes well we could throw down again when the fishing gets even better in Sept and October..

I could handle about six boats or so...  Got a ramp at the house...  Short dock and plenty of space to beach some boats by the lawn...

My crib is tiny- but I have plenty of room in the upper yard behind the house for tents, etc...  I have to limit the boats due to trouble finding space for too many trailers...

Sound like anything some of you dudes may be interested in?

Each guest will recieve a copy of the Grafeful Dead's epic performances in Albany or Saratoga...  Hee hee...  That should set the tone nicely...

Plenty of room for beer in the fridge- a campfire ring next to the water, and adequate Adirondack Chairs...  Well, maybe a few of you might need to bring a place to sit...  Depends, I guess...

Let me know if you think you'd like a day out in Renn County...  Or send me some weekend dates in Aug that work best for you...   It'd be fun to swill a few beers and wail on a few bass and walleye...

Go get 'em!

Jimmy

Reserve a trailer spot for me ... I won't need a tent site as I got first "dibs" on the couch {if I ever make it out of the Adirondack chair} .

I will get busy throwing together an actual date for the shindig...  I like the late-August idea...

Keep posting if any of ya'll are interested...  It will help me get an idea of what I am dealing with here-

And give me some time to alert the local authorities...  Hee hee...

Jimmy,

Sounds like a great plan.  As the newest member to the forum, count me and my Coleman Crawdad in!  Might have an open seat depending upon what Reel Force and Bassin' Brain's plans are.......

All depends on the date ??? I would love to be there.

I could even put my boat in back of my truck if need be, saves from taking up a trailer spot.

Consider this one a "go"...

I will finalize a weekend date (Saturday) in August and hope you guys can make it out...  Looks like we've got 7 dudes already, and I may have a few fly anglers coming up from GA that weekend...  We may have to watch out for them Southern boys when it comes to bass...  But you Walleye dudes can shpw them a thing or two I am sure...

Snyders still has buttloads of 'eyes...  Plenty of them- never got a pig (only been there since Sept 07) but lots of fish around 20"...  And a buddy landed a 22" LMB a few weeks back.  Still swimming in there, I'd like to see the big bass go back...  Here she is:

As for a tourney- I think it would be fun...  But I could leave it to you guys to determine how and costs/payouts, etc.  As for a fly-fishing division Mohawk Dan, I think it'd just be you and me...  But trust me- you might outfish these cats with a 6wt and some deer hair or clousers...  Hee hee...

Either post your preferred weekend date(s) and tourney layout preferences (I have to make it catch and release on bass in fairness to my neighbors- but maybe a walleye and crappie or two for everyone though!) to me or send me a PM or whatever...  Most August Saturdays are good for me...  Looks like the 23rd of August might be a winning date already.  I will know later this week.  Try to get your preferences to me in the next few days if you can.

Weight?  Length? Number of fish?
Entry Fee?  Payout order(s)?  Biggest fish?  Beer drinking contest?  Hee hee...

I would like to cap the boat number to six or seven.  See how that flies before I go too nuts...

As for ice fishing- that will defintaley be done this winter if the ice hardens enough.  This past winter seemed squirelly with the ice.  My first winter on the lake.  I don't know if there are springs or what in there- but the center was slush all season...  But I do have a great campfire spot next to the water- weedbed out front- and a great idea of hanging on shore watching my tip-ups in 10t of water while sitting next to my fire on shore...

Sounds like a good time- let me know what you think...

Here is the "Official Announcement" regarding the 1st Annual Snyders Lake Summer Invitational...

Saturday, August 23rd...  Times to be announced...  Not too early, I can assure you...

Start letting me know you're "IN" for certain and I will get a list going.  Also let me know if you're in a boat (or equivalent) and if you are fishing with someone, plan on fishing solo, or have an open seat for a boatless angler.  I can limit the day (thus far) to about 7 boats- figuring on around 15 people.  We already have half of that and we haven't reached out too far...

No need to, right?  Bigger isn't always better...  And I like the looks of the gang 'in' so far!!!

If we want to do a tourney- it probably shouldn't be more than $10 a head or so...  That stuff is for you to decide.  Post or PM any thoughts...

Plenty of PERCH in there, my good man...  I was wailing on them in shallow this spring- but haven't really chased them enough this summer to find out where they are...  But they are in there...

The lake is small and easy to figure out.  A depth finder is a HUGE help....

But it's the Crappie that really get huge...  They are down pretty deep right now (20-30ft) with the Walleye during the day- but there are some real slabs in that little puddle... 12"+ fish are not unusual...

Food sounds great- I suppose everyone can bring their beverages and some grub or something, and it sounds like most guys (so far) will be rocking Crawdads or Canoes or the like- makes it even easier to handle parking, launching etc...  The lake is small enough that a boat like that is all you need- so long as the wind ain't howling (which it rarely does).  A trolling motor will cover the whole lake easily..  But you can launch in my yard easily on a basic gravel ramp.

I've also got a canoe in case we need another boat.  If we throw together a tourney- I can fish the canoe by my dock and handle all measurements (with someone else) and keep an eye on my cooler all day (making sure my ice cubes don't get dry).  I even have a measuring board from a snook tournament in the Everglades that I judged once.  Friggin OFFICIAL, man!!!

We can figure out the details as time gets closer.

I encourage those who enjoy a few totties on the lake to consider crashing at my place.  I have a tiny cottage with very little room inside, but an elevated lawn behind the house that is level and is perfect for several tents...  You can even fish well into the night if you wish...

Just don't want anyone getting 'popped' on the way home...  Or worse...  And I, for one, plan on making a pretty good run at the Beer Champion Title that weekend...

Might just wear a life jacket and some flippers and fish that way...

Any suggestions are welcome- I am no good with setting up this sort of stuff...  But I have the shoreline and the campfire ring and a grill...  I will leave the not-so-sexy stuff to you crazy cats...

P.S.  The tunes will be cranking dockside all day...  Be forewarned...  Come one, come all!!!  I bet we can get 12-15 guys out there- at least I'd like to think so!

Jimmy

Sounds like a good deal. I'll play as long as I can bring some tunes. I did sound for Jorma in 86 and have over 10,000 disc's , mostly JK, Tuna, Dead & Allmans. Heck even some jamming all together. Work out the details as far as day (s) I would like to set up a tent. For water craft I'm loaded down , I will use something but here is what I can offer that I have. 16' canoe, 10' kayak, 14' jon boat w/ 7 hp motor & 45# troller, 2 float tubes, 3 inflatable rafts (the 17' Ranger will stay home).
Peace & Tuna

Tuna,

You have just *GOTTA* get there, my man!  I saw Jorma play out in Vegas after the Dead shows in '95...  The last three shows I caught before Betty Ford killed Jerry...  I love the Tuna...

I will be sure to have some aduio wired out to the dock and front lawn.  Might even have the big Cerwin Vegas out there if the weather is as good as I hope...

Guys-  I will keep a running tally of the people interested so far.  I think we're up to around 9 or 10 already.  We gotta' capr 'er at 15 or 16 to keep it 'real'....  If all goes well- this won't be the last rendevous on Snyders...

I was out all evening and this morning with an old buddy...  Tossed deer hair frogs on 6wts all evening to bucketheads- including a 17" fish...

This morning it was back to the fly rods before work taking some nice smallies on clousers...  The bite was hot the last 24hrs....  One sweet Smallie broke off boatside with the fly in his lip.  Thought he was lost for good- but saw him flailing on the surface five minutes later.  Motored over to grab him and spooked him into the weedbeds down 6ft.  Could still see him (he wasn't going to make it without help) so I stripped down to boxers and went in after him!  Lipped him outta' the weeds, swam up, handed him to my buddy who immediately yelled out "Pictures!!!"  Too funny...  Nice fish though- "lit up" with the most vivid Tiger Stripes I have seen on a smallmouth.

Here he is- can't believe I had to swim for this one:

Here is a decent LMB that took a surface Hair Frog last nite- took my buddy for a ride with a 4wt rod and 4lb tippet...  A few laps round the boat with this guy:

Keep the responses coming, fella's...  Great to have you 'on board' Tuna...  You might not need any Dead tunes, huh?  Well, bring whatcha' got and I will get 'em on my laptop all night.  The 7hp boat should be prime for Snyders...  Tent space is no sweat...

Man... The 23rd is exactly ten years and one day after I married my wife . We have/(had) plans to do something that weekend .
I'm seriously gonna try to kiss her butt so I can make it . Especially since I wont be the only Fly Flinger out there .  I'll be flying solo in my crappy canoe . Not that I'm a loaner , but I like to stand and 2 in the canoe make that tough .  Are the boys from GA on any other flyfishing boards?
If I can make it I'll bring the beans . I like to play with the 6 and 4 wt but I chuck some big stuff for bass . I use the Sage Largemouth or an 8wt . The largemouth can chuck half a wet sock .

Gotdam , I hope I can make it .

Sweet. I'm officially "in". Wish I still had one of my rowboats. I can bring my 16' Starcraft and most definitely have an available seat. Also will bring Sam Adams Cream Stout. (can't drink that beer you can see through). And will make my wife prepare some sort of pasta or 'tater salad.

ps. 3 beers, and I'm floored. cheap drunk.

Dan- we hope you can make it...  But I would surely understand if you need to celebrate the big Ten Year Anniversary that weekend...  I would assume a few stragglers may still be wandering around on Sunday if you want to come over and check it out then...

I would like for you guys to chime in on anything you prefer "fishing wise"...  I am no tournament guy- but I did help with a few big tourneys down in South Florida during my eight-year stint at Everglades National Park.

Times, rules, etc are sort of up to you- unless you have THAT much faith in someone like me!  I am just hoping for a good day to get a few fellow anglers together, have a good time and some good food, and see what hawgs you guys can pull out of Snyders...  It really doesn't get fished too hard- I am obviously the only one out there every evening...

There are no more than five other guys on the lake who fish it 'religously'...  And a few guys I see regulalry who must know someone on the lake who provide them with a place to launch, etc.

If it makes anyone feel better- I won't be "competing" since I do have a bit more 'local knowlege' than most on that little lake...

I can measure 'em, download all Hot Tuna's sweet jams, and catch plenty of fish in the front yard from the dock, from my canoe, or from my Starcraft.  I am looking forward to seeing how everyone approaches a 'new' lake and what kind of pigs are brought in over the course of the day...

I will get a list started today or tomorrow- and post and update it regularly enough that everyone can see whos "in" and just how many "spots" are still open...

As for non-board guys- it would be MUCH better to keep it 'in the family' of course.  I am hoping I am allowed two 'executive exemptions' for an old friend who will be visiting from GA, and a buddy in Clifton Park who I grew up with...  Trust me- my buddy in Clifton Park is a threat to NO ONE except a cooler full of Molsons...  But his 1974 Montgomery Wards (seriously) outboard has towed me in from the Gulf of Mexico and the Hudson...

I owe it to the lad to let him come over and see how the 'real anglers' do it on a Saturday afternoon!

My buddy from GA wil be in town that week and is fired up to get out fishing with me.  He fishes only with the fly rod...

Glad to see the interest- it should be a GREAT time for everyone...  Laid back, BBQ'd grub, icy coolers, Adirondack Chairs...  I will notify the neighbors so we shouldn't have any noise 'issues'...  Rock on!!!

Oh yeah- I mentioned the coloration of the Smallie from yesterday morning, but the photo I posted didn't really show it clearly.  This release shot is better- check out the 'War Paint' on this lil' tubby Bronzeback...  WILD!!!

Nice ! hey jimmy, you don't mind me asking, where you a sullivan neversink at one time? Big bad smallies in there you know! They were blamed for eating all the baitfish at one point in time! lol , i.m going 20 years on that lake but usually fish it spring and alittle fall for the smallies. I don't know if I can wing it for the gathering but if I can..It will be me and a good fishing partner and i'll put the crawdad on the racks. I like it up by you guys but it is opposite where I normally go for weekenders. Cheers and happy summertime all the same! Hey force, rt.206  bridge washed out AGAIN up my site!  Alot of heavy rain flooding  we having these days!..gl

BackIn-  yeah that's me...

I lived down in Claryville for about two years before moving to Albany, and had a place right on the banks of the East Branch of the Neversink...  Just a few miles to the Neversink and Rondout Reservoirs...

And yes- those smallies in those NYC reservoirs are absurd...  HUGE fish...  And totally overlooked- everyone wants those 20lb browns...  And those lakers in the Rondout are true pigs...

I don't blame them- but I sure as heck wasn't wasting summer evenings trolling leadcore out of the rowboat when there were 5lb Smallies on every shoreline inhaling deer hair bugs or rapalas!!!

I will be back down in the Gorge next month after an Allman Bros show at Bethel...  I tend to fish NORTH of Albany a lot more than SOUTH, to better avoid the people...  Good fish in the Catskills- but I prefer the solitude of the ADKs- and the scenery (and local driving ability) is much superior...

Hope you can make it- keep in touch...

It seems like a lot of boats will be available. To alleviate a congestion of trailers (my 14' is on a trailer) I would like to catch a ride with someone who will be bringing a boat with a stable casting platform (HLS with those SA's sounds sweet). Of course I'd be bringing some kind brews and good eats along also. So as a plan I'll throw the canoe on my roof racks incase needed. Like MHD I would also be flailing with some fat flies.
All this sounds great and hope everyone can make the show.
as for a tourney, I'm not a big fan of them (I had my share in the 80's) but I'd join in , kinda pro-choice.  I'd like to see things C & R so we'll have to work out a system to measure, record and release on the lake as not all crafts will have a live well.
A question to be answered would be when we would start the festival . Sat morning or Friday night ?
Sat sounds good to me as fishing in the hot sun with a big head sucks.

Truth be told- I am not a big "Tourney Fan" either Tuna...  But it seemed like a great way to get everyone together for a day with a little added "Spice".

Another option is a lunker pool...  Thats simple...

As for getting fish to be measured, etc- the lake is so small that anyone can get to my dock in less than five minutes...  That should help...

Heck- I am open to ANYTHING and want it to be chill, laid-back, and a good time for all...

If the "Lunker Pool" sounds like a better idea to any of you- we can easily decide democratically...  Seems like someone could cover their gas money + with a nice fish...

As for start times- my place will be open and available for camping, fishing, etc. by about 7pm on Friday night...

The actual start time can be determined as we get closer.  I am all for YOU guys deciding what you like best- and trying to make decisions that are in everyone (and the fish's) best interest.

Obviously- I live on the lake so I can fish everyday.  And wouldn't be inviting you all over to my house if I expected you to kill every fish you catch and bring it home...  Bass are all C&R and there are some pigs...

If guys want a walleye or a perch or a crappie, I have no problem with that so long as greed doesn't take hold...

Looking forward to it- hope the weather cooperates...  Drop me a line with any questions...

Jimmy

I'd say a 1 bass lunker no culling sounds like a great idea, winner take all. Kinda forces you to make an on the spot choice. What I said about riding along , just trying to limit trailers. Here is my small boat and if someone would like to leave their larger rig home I can bring this the canoe and offer a rider in the jon boat. Just let me know and Thanks Again.

And we could use this:

I agree, the adirondacks blow the catskills away for the most part. huh, claryville right up the street from my bros place! I get serious spring and again late fall extended season for this area,, drive from nev. to pepac.. fly the east br del in fall after sept. it is roundout..and  over peekamouse to chimney hole egging all on up to the portal. Been my second backyard for close to three decades now. I have enough boats chained on all these reservoirs. I tried that leadcore years ago,it works but not my style.. i like going light as possible for the fight.a clamp on canon but found I been having good results with little dipsy divers, alot less carry around too.. Haven't been out in the boats as much as I thought I would this year though .. In fact, . last week was the first on the nev ! rowed out the cove,  thunder scared me in waited went back out , thunder scared me in .. was trolling little jon dipsy diver with a sutton on one rod and a rapala#9 natural the other.. on the way in the dipsy snagged in 31 ft. had to backrow to get it back,  so i was dragging deep enough and like these divers.. be as it may ..i will do it again for the salmonoids next few weeks.. let you know how goes.. I want to try those smallies too with my jigs / deep bass lures etc. closer to those 30ft shoreline cove structures. Okay there jimmy, until nect time!

Hit Cooneys Point on the Rondout in the evening...  Walk in from the Bald Eagle viewing area...

The smallies are immense- and there by the DOZENS all summer long...  Daytime is slow- evening is epic...

And I will persoanlly guarantee at least four bald eagle sightings per trip...  Hee hee...

As for the TOURNAMENT:

"Lunker Pool" does sound easiest!!!  I like it!!!  Five bucks- ten bucks, whatever...  Then if folks don't want to join they don't have to...  They can just fish...  No reason to get too complicated!

Check the special post for the "1st Annual Snyders Lake Summer Invitational" for all the details...

Go get 'em this weekend, fellas!!!

One of my boats is right across from the canonsvilles outlet. I fished that many years and caught nice browns and lakers.. never bothered much on the roundout for summer SM.. again it is (early spring and late fall trout)  for me on that roundout.. I can't be everywhere jimmy, my lawn to cut is up by pepacton.. much more solitude and definitely more scenic. I know more SM hotspots on all the reservoirs I go to than I will probably ever fish.. (if that makes any sense?   I'm going to try to bucket me some bullheads next camping trip on that pepacton up tpwards margaretsville.   Last 5 to 7 inch wash turned that end of the resi brown.. driving around from the dam right about after holiday brook rd. it started looking muddy. Good thing is with all this rain, resis will be closer to full pool making launching access easier from shore. If the trout are slow(usually are this time of year) best if fishing predawn until fog lifts... I will try sounding the bait for smallies in the 30 ft range along those dropoffs. My boat is by the powerlines otherwise known as miller hollow.
