Anybody else having trouble with gar eating their cut bait.  I landed one gar fishing for cats last week and had about ten other hits that I know weren't cats.  Anyone else having this problem? Any tips on how to minimize it?

Beerdude, because of the shape and anatomy of a gars mouth, they need to reposition baitfish so that they can be swallowed head/tail first. They seem to grab the bait, swim a short distance and drop it or open their mouths slightly till it is head or tail first. They do this 3 or more times so thats oneof the reasons guys miss them; they set the hook too soon. Guys also miss Gar because their hooks are not razor sharp. Essentially you are setting hook into rock hard bone. If you think your hooks might be sharp enough to penetrate your aluminum boat or a cinder block they are NOT sharp enough for Gar. Hooks should be rediculously sharp.
Oh yeah, if its Gar going after your cutbait, maybe its too big of a piece.

You want to hook a gar? Take a hook and serve it with a piece of nylon rope. Take the ends and fray then out, now tie knots in the end of the rope strands. Put your cut bait on the hook and let the knotted rope splay around the bait(like a jig and pig so to speak). The knots will get caught in the gars teeth and you will reel him in eliminating your bait thief. Check it out...

Mmmmmm..... Did have a quick breakoff the other night. Cut bait had barely hit the bottom, if it did. Did not consider gar.......

Friday I landed 3 and reeled at least 5 more halfway in.  They were once again eating my cut bait and live chubs all night long.  Kinda sucks!

If your goal is to catch gar then buy small minnows, like the ones you would use for trout, use #12 or 14 hooks and a bobber with about 2-3 ft above your bait, when u get a taker, let it swim for a bit then give em a good yank and you'll get em, always works for me, i usually go around 20 for 40 when we're tryin for them lol, Cabelas has a huge 1 in their tank down in Wheeling.

Any one got any pic's of gar they caught. I have never caught one, but it sounds like a challenging fish to keep on the hook  -

Leadmen, if that fish in texas was around 100lbs, I'd bet it all to say it was an alligator gar not a longnose gar. We, unfourtanately, don't have alligator gar in Pennsylvania.

This is an alligator gar (first pic). The second picture is a long nose gar.

Carphead,They also have longnose gar in Texas,I have caught them in the 50" ,15-20# range. This was in the Dallas area. They were great fighters & jumpers, much like musky. After missing quite a few because of thier long bills we tied a stinger treble hook below the bluegill we were using & started to hook them in the bill.  sam

Mr. Crappie, I know they have longnose gar in Texas, but they sure as hell don't have any 100 lb longnose gar swimming around.
