Is there anybody in greensburg area, that is a fly fisherman. Who won't mind teaching a newbie? I'm available after 6pm weekdays. And weekend days.

I've got a fly rod and took it out once. I was sore when I was done with all the casting. Which I later found out that I was doing it wrong.

I dont need to catch trout in a stream. Heck a bluegill in Twin lakes works just as well for me.

Get yourself a video, or hire a guide for a day.

Your best bet would be to find a seminar or general fly fishing class from one of the fly shops in the PGH area. You would learn more than a guide would show you about a particular stream and they would be more geared to teaching basic fundamentals instead of trying to find you a fish to catch, plus it would be cheaper.. Just my 2 cents..

Figures a guide would tell you to hire a guide. I sell cars, your probably gonna need a new car to get you to your guide aren't you???

Pretty funny huh

. A guide can take your learning curve down big time. Ive turned friends of mine into decent fly fisherman in hours. Rather then years. Not all guide teach you just where to catch fish. I for example will show you how to tie your own leaders, where to find fish, not just take you to them. How to figure out what they are eating. When do certain flies hatch. How to cast properly, how to build dropper rigs.

If your guides are only taking you to and getting you on fish, find someone else.

Oh, and skip the car, ill pick you up at any reasonable distance.

After I bought my first Flyrod The old flytyier/fisherman took me out in the yard and told me.. For the back cast pretend that you are throwing a frisbee hesitate for a second or two, then pretend like you are hitting a nail with a hammer. That got my wife & I started and we progressed from there by fishing and also watching videos. Don't try to overpower the rod. Hve fun

Gotta have fun. pardon my manners. Look on the internet and make sure your casting correctly. Get out there to a nice open area on a pond or lake and throw down. A little fly spinner for sunnies and even bass is a good place to start. Watch your casting . If you dont have to deal with casting in trees you can figure out a lot. Good luck . 299$ im all yours.lol

I fall in the dummy category as well. Friday nite I was fishing the water works ponds with my 5 year old and saw huge brookies that were stocked rising. For the life of me I couldnt figure out what they were feeding on. DryflyTu hooked me up with a nice rod and and some midges. Next day day nothing was rising. "Welcome to the world of flyfishing" was his comment when I reported back to him.

He's been trying to get me into it for 15 years. His advice has always been, watch, learn and get on some water and cast.

If your arm is hurting, you're probably attempting to use it too much or too hard. Let the rod work with you, not against you. Using force will never make you a better caster, or cast farther but learning correct technique and timing will. Fly casting should be graceful and effortless. There are times I've felt sore too. It's from my inability to adjust to a rod that doesn't fit me. Everyone has their own style. Now is the time to find that for yourself, before bad habits start to form.
